Speaker Pelosi Revokes Vice President Pence's House Office Space

Nancy Pelosi says impeaching Donald Trump 'just not worth it' Pelosi comes out against impeaching Trump: 'He's just not worth it'
Andrew Cummings | 15 March, 2019, 02:55

Democrats are largely lining up behind House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her wait-and-see strategy on any impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump. Otherwise, she said, "I don't think we should go down that path, because it divides the country".

"I'm not for impeachment", Pelosi told The Post's Joe Heim.

Now that Pelosi is being widely quoted as coming out against the impeachment of Trump, Democrats are divided over her comments, meaning another such moment will be litigated in coming days.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib of MI, who took office demanding her fellow Democrats "impeach the [expletive]", and who renewed her push as recently as Friday, dialed back after Mrs. Pelosi's comments, saying she's content with investigations for now.

Lest anyone cite crumbling support for Richard Nixon during impeachment proceedings in 1974 (leading to his coerced resignation) as precedent for the same thing happening to Trump, the fact is this is a very different and more right-wing Republican Party than the one that weighed Nixon's fate back then, and Trump's approval rating among Republicans is much higher. "If we're presented with compelling evidence that the president committed impeachable offenses, I think we have to vote for impeachment".

"We've got 62 new [Democratic] members", he said.

But hard questions about how and whether to proceed with impeachment will likely drag out for weeks, as Mr Mueller's investigation comes to a close and as House Democrats ramp up their own investigations. Politico's savvy reporters speculate that Pelosi did this to create a holding pattern for Democrats, temporarily insulating them from unceasing questioning on this topic from activists by allowing them to blame Pelosi's opposition.

And in explosive congressional testimony late last month, former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen branded the president a conman and cheat and sought to implicate his ex-boss in multiple crimes. "This is something that goes back to the Clinton era, this is something the new democrats believed in in the 1990's".

"I want to look at the Mueller report before I make a decision about whether I believe he should or should not be impeached", she told reporters outside the Capitol on Monday night.

"If we hadn't talked about impeachment, God knows what he would have done", Sherman said.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff said a unilateral pursuit of impeachment by Democrats would be an "exercise doomed for failure". However, the Democratic leader also noted that she believes Trump is ethically, intellectually, and politically unfit to serve as president. It will be the third time Green has done so, but the first time in the Democratic majority House.

During her "Post" interview, Ms Pelosi spoke at length about how the impeachment of president Bill Clinton divided the country. Although she still doubts Mr. Trump's fitness for office, the California Democrat said the process of impeachment would be too damaging to the country.

Green said in the interview he has done little to whip the vote.

If Trump were impeached, it would mean half of the nation's last four presidents would have been subject to what traditionalists say should be a last resort. Less harm would have been done to the country and the future of its system of government if the House Judiciary Committee had voted to just let the whole Watergate affair slide, than it would for Congress to shrink from its duty now. "Impeachment is a divisive issue in our country".
