Forty-nine people have been killed and three people are in custody after attackers opened fire during Friday prayers at two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch.

Christchurch Police Commissioner Mike Bush said both locations were in lock-down, as were all schools in the city.

The gunman who killed numerous worshippers in a New Zealand mosque on Friday was a right-wing "terrorist" with Australian citizenship, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said.

Bush later stated that a number of improvised explosive devices, which had been attached to vehicles, had been defused after the shootings.

In a press conference, New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the attack as "one of New Zealand's darkest days".

National Policing lead for Counter Terrorism, Neil Basu said: "We are monitoring events in New Zealand closely and send our condolences to all those affected. As you can imagine, this is requiring every police and emergency resource we have available". Forty-eight people, including children, are receiving treatment in Christchurch Hospital after being injured in the attack, according to New Zealand health authorities.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she mourned "with New Zealanders for their fellow citizens who were attacked and murdered out of racist hatred while peacefully praying in their mosques".

Kate said: "It's utterly cowardly, but it points to a horrific bravado that they would do that and I think it is just disgusting". For many, this may not have been the place they were born, in fact for many, New Zealand was their choice.
