Mass shooting at mosque in Christchurch
17 March, 2019, 04:09
"I'm sickened by the news coming out of New Zealand - the horrific terrorist attack targeting Muslims at prayer that killed at least 49 people", the 2020 presidential hopeful tweeted.
In a media address, Ardern said that "this can only be described as a terrorist attack". "Please know we are working vigilantly to remove any violent footage".
The attacks targeted the Masjid al Noor mosque, where 41 people died, and a second, smaller mosque in the suburb of Linwood, where seven more died.
With such a brutal and premeditated attack, coupled with a manifesto published online and the fact that the assailant filmed the massacre, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the events in Christchurch represented "an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence" as she mourned that numerous victims were likely migrants or refugees who came to New Zealand expecting safety and security.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison stated that the shooter in the Christchurch mosque attack was an Australian citizen, describing the suspect as an "extremist, right-wing, violent terrorist".
"Forty-eight patients, ranging from young children to adults with gunshot wounds are being treated at Christchurch Hospital. It must have been an automatic - no one could pull a trigger that quick", the man who did not wish to be named, told AFP.
Police made a statement saying they "strongly urge" people not to share the footage, and they were working to remove it. Officials significantly strengthened gun laws, severely restricted semi-automatic weapons and engaged in a buyback program that took more than 650,000 firearms off the streets.
The man charged with murder in the New Zealand attack cited a list of white nationalists who inspired him in his putative manifesto posted online. One gunman is believed to be responsible for both shootings, police say.
Ali said "there is a reason" why the suspected shooter named Trump in his manifesto.
The gun laws in New Zealand are more layered and do not fit easily into a pro- or anti-gun rubric.
One witness told stuff.co.nz he was praying when he heard shooting - and then saw his wife lying dead on the footpath outside when he fled.
"My warmest sympathy and best wishes goes out to the people of New Zealand after the terrible massacre in the Mosques", he tweeted.
In the United States, after the Sandy Hook and Parkland school shootings took place, as well as numerous other mass shootings in Las Vegas, Orlando, Sutherland Springs, Virginia Tech and elsewhere, we have really gained no new grounds in regulations that will help protect us from mass shootings in the future.
"What has happened in Christchurch is an extraordinary act of unprecedented violence".
Mass shootings are very rare in New Zealand, which tightened its gun laws to restrict access to semi-automatic rifles in 1992, two years after a mentally ill man shot dead 13 people in the South Island town of Aramoana. 49 innocent people have so senselessly died, with so many more seriously injured.
Trump, whose rhetoric is sometimes aligned with the far right in the United States, added: "The U.S. stands by New Zealand for anything we can do". While, in America, most mass shootings result in politicians offering their 'thoughts and prayers, ' rather than finding a real common sense answer to a problem that we have been facing over and over again, in New Zealand, things appear to be done more efficiently.
