"We're working to resolve the issue as soon as possible", Facebook tweeted around 2 p.m. ET.

In its own statement on Thursday, reported by CNBC, Facebook blamed "a server configuration change that triggered a cascading series of issues".

From about noon NY time Wednesday, global users encountered only partially loaded pages or no content at all on Facebook's main social network and its related services, including photo-sharing site Instagram and messaging tools Messenger and WhatsApp.

"We're very sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate everyone's patience", Facebook said.

Despite some early online rumors that the outages were the result of a distributed denial-of-service (DDos) attack - a type of hack in which attackers flood a company's network - Facebook said in another tweet that "the issue is not related to a DDoS attack".

The outages started around midday Wednesday, hitting users for more than 24 hours and surpassing the tech giant's last comparable outage in 2008.

Facebook suffered a huge outage starting on Wednesday that affected users worldwide. Some people weren't able to reach Facebook's website and apps, including Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp.

People took to Twitter to complain about the downtime.

While Facebook said it has "resolved its issues", the update was sparse on details.

"We really don't know anything, and at this time, that's fascinating in and of itself", Patterson said.

Separately, the New York Times reported on Wednesday that U.S. federal prosecutors were conducting a criminal investigation into data deals Facebook struck with more than 150 technology companies such as Amazon.com Inc and Apple Inc.

The outage also affected Facebook Workplace and reportedly affected its ads management service.

Facebook has maintained that it shared limited amounts of user data with smartphone makers and other outside partners to enable its services to work well on devices or with applications.
