Elizabeth Warren has made her presidential candidacy official, kicking off her bid for the White House at a rally in the working-class town of Lawrence, Massachusetts.

US Senator Elizabeth Warren was surely not surprised that her Saturday presidential campaign announcement drew criticism from the Republican Party. Not afraid to go after big banks and big business, she may yet turn into a frontrunner, too. She has spent the past decade in the national spotlight, first emerging as a consumer activist during the financial crisis.

She has $11 million left over from her commanding 2018 Senate re-election victory that can be used on her presidential run. A recent CNN poll found that fewer Democrats said they'd be very likely to support Warren if she runs than said the same of former Vice-President Joe Biden, Sen.

Warren has been a frontrunner among democrats in the presidential running for months now.

The 69-year-old from the USA state of MA has already become a main target of Trump, who has dubbed Warren "Pocahontas" for previously identifying herself as a Native American, a controversy that has plagued the run-up to her candidacy. And even a PAC called Stop Pocahontas. Bernie Sanders in 2016; Hillary Clinton, then a NY senator, in 2008; and then-Massachusetts Sen. Kamala Harris of California and Sanders. After their divorce in 1978, she married Bruce Mann, a Harvard University law professor, in 1980.

As supporters cheered and clapped, she also said on Saturday, "I'm opting out ..." He did so on Twitter, where he made light of Warren and threw down a campaign gauntlet. "I will never give up on you", she said. She will then travel to a campaign event in nearby Dover, New Hampshire.

Warren has often spoken of how her parents eloped after her father's family disapproved of his future wife's Native American lineage, but Warren for years could never produce documentation to bolster her claims.

However, when all is said and done, almost two dozen Democrats are expected to enter the fray, with others like Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, former Vice President Joe Biden, Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley, California Congressman Eric Swalwell and former Texas Congressman Beto O'Rourke having signaled they're considering a run. Instead, her use of a genetic test to prove ethnicity spurred controversy that seemed to blunt any argument she sought to make.

Standing against the backdrop of Lawrence's Everett Mills - the site of the "Bread and Roses" labor strike - the Massachusetts Democrat laid out her vision for an America that prioritizes working and middle-class people over the wealthy and well-connected. "On Sat, February 9, I'll be making a BIG announcement about my 2020 plans". They're both leaders of the Democrats' liberal vanguard, but some Sanders supporters are still upset she didn't support him during his 2016 primary challenge against Hillary Clinton. "Only under President Trump's leadership will America continue to grow safer, secure and more prosperous".

Hoping to put the controversy to rest, Warren released DNA tests in October - but this backfired when they showed her to have only negligible amounts of Native blood, dating back generations.
