More than 500 homes in Australia are underwater and thousands more face the risk of flooding as historic rains pour over the city of Townsville in Queensland.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison visited a new housing estate where scores of homes had been inundated.
Townsville has been hammered by more than one metre of rain in a week for the first time on record. Grocery store chain Woolworths said it was sending in food supplies by barge, while supermarket chain Coles was flying stocks into Cairns and trucking them to Townsville.
"Queensland has already born its fair share of extreme weather recently, with unprecedented bushfires, drought, heatwave, a cyclone, and now intense rainfall and flood", said Richard Thornton of the Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Centre.
"I just couldn't believe what I saw. there were just wades of water coming through the shed and [patio]".
"The real work is to make sure that they can get through the clean-up and rebuild their lives".
The monsoon trough that has delivered disaster to Townsville has also generated floods out west, with farmers around Cloncurry, McKinlay and Flinders shire reporting livestock losses.
Major Hodge said his own home was "gone" and he had to evacuate his own family from Idalia on Sunday night.
9 News reported that entire suburbs of Townsville were completely submerged.
