Trump climbs down in wall row, Congress passes bill ending shutdown

President Donald Trump is prepared to close the federal government again if he and congressional leaders are unable to strike a budget deal that includes funding for a U.S. -Mexico border wall, acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney said.

Pelosi was also dismissive of what Trump thinks of her, according to the Daily Beast, when she was asked about being with the president when the cameras aren't rolling. "We're still in the middle of negotiations".

California Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the leading Republican in the House, said Democrats have funded border barriers in the past and are refusing this time simply because Trump is asking for it.

Declaring an emergency could allow Trump to circumvent Congress and repurpose funds Congress has appropriated for other purposes in order to build a wall.

President Donald Trump, who famously vowed to negotiate big deals in the White House, came out of a government shutdown battle on Friday politically wounded and outmaneuvered by US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi. "We will have great security", Trump said.

Pointing out a shallow political point, Dobbs said that judging by appearances only Trump's capitulation against his own government shutdown looks bad in the national news media circuit.

But Mulvaney breezed past the plight of contractors in his response, noting that the roughly 800,000 federal employees stung by the shutdown would likely receive retroactive pay in the coming days.

He noted the White House would prefer to 'get it through legislation. Faced with an internal revolt, Mr McConnell telephoned Mr Trump to tell him that the shutdown could not hold, reported the Washington Post.

Thursday's failure of two Bills in the Democrat-controlled House and Republican-majority Senate, one with wall funding and the other without, underscored the increasing precariousness of Mr Trump's position as six members of his party broke ranks to vote to reopen the government without the funding.

With Americans exasperated over the 35-day shutdown's impact on everyday life, including air travel, Trump finally gave in and agreed to reopen the government until February 15, without getting the $5.7 billion he had demanded for a border wall.

The partial federal shutdown ended Friday when Trump gave in to mounting pressure, retreating from his demand that Congress commit to the border wall funding before federal agencies could resume work.

"I don't think shutdowns are good leverage", Republican Senator Marco Rubio said on CNN's State of the Union.

When will they get paid?

Mulvaney also promised, "At the end of the day, the president is going to secure the border one way or another".

The wall wasn't the only topic on Trump's mind.

"Some of them could be early this week".

Mulvaney added, "He'll do it with or without Congress".

The editorial then attacked Trump's wall supporters - who have now turned on him - who claim they care about border security but are just cashing in on the racist sentiments of his supporters. A bipartisan committee will work together with the Department of Homeland Security to come up with a border security package for the president to sign.
