China to collect samples from moon this year

Super Wolf Blood Moon Coming Jan. 20, Epic Eclipse To Last Over 1 Hour ‘Super Wolf Blood Moon’: How to see this weekend’s total lunar eclipse

After Chang'e-4 landed on the far side of the Moon on January 3, the ground control centre instructed the probe to water the plants to start the growing process.

China is now the third country to establish a presence on the moon after the United States and Russian Federation.

The Chang'e 4 lander, which softly landed on the far side of the moon on January 3, carried soil with cotton and potato seeds, fruit fly eggs, and yeast, BBC News reported.

However, plants have successfully been grown on the worldwide Space Station (ISS). The mission's architects say the experiments could help lay a foundation for one day establishing a lunar base.

Planted among the cotton seeds are other biological experiments, including rapeseed and potato seeds.

It would mean that astronauts could potentially harvest their own food in space, reducing the need to come back down to Earth to re-supply, the BBC reported.

Along with a number of sophisticated scientific instruments, the mission's lunar lander carried a sealed container, the lunar mini biosphere experiment.

Australia's Home Affairs Department said it would "consider this referral in the usual way, as it does with all UNHCR referrals". Several countries including Canada and Australia were in talks with the United Nations refugee agency on accepting Alqunun.

"This is the first time humans have done biological growth experiments on the lunar surface", Gengxin told The Guardian. They also added yeast, fruit fly eggs and the seeds of cotton, rapeseed, potato and rock cress-a flowering plant in the mustard family.

This Apollo 15 image captures the planned landing locale of China's Chang's 5 lunar sample-return mission - the Mons Rümker region in the northern part of Oceanus Procellarum.

But it's also a supermoon, where the moon is at its closest point to Earth.

According to Wu, the Chang'e 6 mission will be created to bring samples back from the moon's south polar region.

Professor Liu Hanlong was in charge of the mission and issued the following statement on the accomplishment: "We have given consideration to future survival in space". We often think of the moon orbiting around the Earth in a flawless circle, but the reality is that the orbit is more elliptical in nature.

China National Space Administration said on Monday that China would send a probe to Mars around 2020.
