While many onlookers note that Major League Baseball's guaranteed salary structure should be more enticing to Murray (or any player), that's somewhat of a presumptuous argument.

Back in October, then-Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury had seemingly endless good things to say about Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Chronicle reported Murray would not play both sports due to the demands on an National Football League quarterback.

According to a source, Murray declaring for the draft is not considered to be contractually significant. Given his abilities as both a passer and runner, combined with the success Mayfield had as a rookie, the expectation is Murray would be a first-round pick and have success in the NFL. After his introduction, Beane opened the floor to Murray, who answered each question with poise, which isn't a surprise considering the media attention he's received since high school.

Declaring for the draft would not guarantee that Murray would choose football, and the A's would retain his professional rights, even if he tried the NFL first. Spring training for the A's opens on February 15, and it appears unlikely Murray would be able to prepare for the NFL scouting combine at the same time as attending his first major league baseball camp. Will Leitch, contributing editor to New York Magazine, thinks this trend could go beyond bowl games.

Murray is at the top of the list for a bunch of teams, especially for a team that has the #1 pick, in which the Arizona Cardinals now have. While he could see some success in football, it would also require NFL teams to shape themselves around his type of play and size while baseball stands a better chance of getting him up to speed with the pace of their game. In late November, Marc Tracy of The New York Times revealed that ESPN's Todd McShay believed Murray would be a first-round pick. But it's finally becoming real as the final days for him to make a decision are on the horizon. For instance, 16-year veteran Josh McCown has made $49 million over the course of his career after being a third-round pick in 2002.
