Arab Americans, civil liberties groups challenging anti-BDS bill in US Congress

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. A senior Senate Democratic aide said Dec. 7 that he would oppose con Marco Rubio: Rashida Tlaib's Dual Loyality Suggestion 'anti-Semitic'

"Senate Republicans should instead bring to the floor the House-passed bills to reopen the government", the aide said, referencing a six-bill omnibus package passed by the new Democratic House majority last week to reopen agencies that have been closed since December 22 (E&E Daily, Jan. 4).

The Jewish Democratic Council of America supported the Senate Democrats on the vote, tweeting shortly after that they are "right to insist on reopening the government and ending the #Trumpshutdown".

President Donald Trump is shouldering most of the blame for the shutdown, according to various polls, and House Democrats are the only ones moving legislation to reopen the government. Citing the Syria sanctions component of his bill, he mocked Democrats who ridiculed Trump's confusing Syria policy - the president has said he will pull troops out of Syria, while his top aides have said there is no schedule to do so.

Schumer, leader of the minority party, is trying to pressure fellow Democrats to join a filibuster that will prevent Senate Bill 1 from coming up for a vote.

"The administration is committed to working with the Congress to reopen agencies affected b lapsed appropriations, but any effort to do so must address the security and humanitarian crisis on our Southwest border and should restore funding for all agencies affected by the lapse", a statement of administration policy declared.

Senator Chuck Schumer, leader of the Senate Democrats, called the president's exit a "temper tantrum" and said Trump "slammed the table" before he stormed out.

Casey's Republican colleague, Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey, has suggested that Democrats bear some responsibility for the impasse.

"But I don't think we should vote on that until we have a vote on funding the government". The speeches were part of an aggressive public relations campaign to win public support in the standoff over the 18-day partial government shutdown.

Matt Brooks, the CEO of the Republican Jewish Coalition, said the GOP leadership thought it worthwhile to pass noncontroversial legislation while the border wall issue remains unresolved.

"When the government is shut down, there are consequences, and people are starting to feel those consequences", Murkowski said she told the president.

Later this week, the House will vote on bills covering national parks, and housing and transportation, as well as agriculture - which administers the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, more colloquially referred to as SNAP or food stamps.

The Democratic Party's decision to block the bill came amid the government shutdown caused by the bipartisan budget disagreements.

Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.), the House bill's chief sponsor, announced on Thursday that the For the People Act has been co-sponsored by 221 Democrats ― enough to pass in the House. "A significant # of Senate Democrats now support #BDS & Dem leaders want to avoid a floor vote that reveals that", Rubio tweeted Monday. Ben Cardin, Virginia Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., Sen. Cory Booker, Oregon Sen. "Let me be clear: these are Republican bills". Jeff Merkley and Delaware Sen.

They are also supported by key liberal outside groups, including the Center for American Progress, Indivisible and the AFL-CIO, although this strategy hasn't been backed caucus-wide.
