US Senators convinced 'crazy' Saudi prince 'culpable' for Khashoggi murder

U.S. senators more certain than ever Saudi crown prince was behind Khashoggi killing US Senators convinced 'crazy' Saudi prince 'culpable' for Khashoggi murder

A small group of leading senators were set to be briefed Tuesday by CIA Director Gina Haspel on the classified findings of the agency's investigation into whether or not Prince Mohammed ordered self-exiled Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's death last month at the hands of Riyadh's agents in the kingdom's consulate building in Istanbul.

A Saudi government critic who was living in self-imposed exile in the US, Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October.

Graham's rage about the crown prince's involvement was shared by Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, R-Tennessee.

The Wall Street Journal first reported that Haspel would conduct a briefing. Lindsey Graham after the meeting, referring to the grisly conclusion that the journalist's body had been cut up with a bone saw after his death.

After last week's hearing, lawmakers complained that Trump - who touts arms deals to the Saudis as one of the reasons he doesn't want to ruffle the regime's feathers - was withholding information about the killing of Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist.

The comments come ahead of a briefing expected to be held next Thursday by Trump administration officials, including secretary of state Mike Pompeo and defence secretary Jim Mattis, to the House of Representative, according to Reuters.

"The views that I had before have only solidified", said Menendez, who has called for a strong USA response to Khashoggi's death and backs legislation to end all American support for the Saudi coalition waging war in Yemen, a conflict in which tens of thousands have been killed or starved to death.

Graham said after the briefing that he would push for a nonbinding resolution that the crown prince was "complicit" in Khashoggi's murder.

Saudi authorities have vehemently denied the crown prince was involved. That afternoon, senators frustrated with the briefing and the lack of response to Khashoggi's killing overwhelmingly voted to move forward with consideration of the Yemen resolution, 63-37. "And at the same time what is protecting USA interests, what is going to counter Shia extremists; what will help bring stability; what will help bring an end to the war in Yemen".

Graham also said that he would not support the current USA military efforts to support Saudi Arabia in its war against Houthi rebels in Yemen.

US intelligence officials have concluded that the crown prince must have at least known of the plot, but Trump has been reluctant to pin the blame.

"Saudi Arabia is a strategic ally, and the relationship is worth saving".

"And the second thing is what is in the best interest of the United States and this is a very, very hard challenge because we have to, on one hand, hold them accountable, including the crown prince, for whatever action he may be involved with", the Utah congressman said. Trump said in a statement on 20 November. He said he had been briefed about the highly indicting Central Intelligence Agency investigation comprising audio evidence but would not to listen to the audio because "it's a suffering tape, it's a bad tape".
