Ukraine's Poroshenko proposes terminating treaty on friendship with Russian Federation

The Kremlin said Mr Poroshenko's latest announcement is an "absurd" attempt to inflame tensions. Moreover, during the preceding months, Russian Federation had systematically and aggressively obstructed Ukrainian and global shipping in the Sea of Azov (see EDM, February 22, April 12, May 22, 31, June 11, 28, November 6).

Late last month Russian Federation opened fire on and seized three Ukranian navy vessels as they tried to pass through the Kerch Strait from the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov.

The Ukrainian president, Petro Poroshenko, responded to the standoff by introducing martial law for 30 days, a measure Ukraine had not taken even after Crimea's annexation and amid large-scale fighting between Ukrainian forces and Russia-backed separatists in 2014-15.

Poroshenko said Monday that some reservists will be summoned for training as part of martial law.

"Ukraine is taking its own steps in response to the threat of a large-scale Russian invasion", the Ukrainian leader said. He said Russian Federation has stationed units on Ukrainian's eastern border that specialize in deep reconnaissance and penetration.

Putin - who has praised his navy for defending Russian territory - "provided exhaustive explanations on this incident in the Black Sea, explaining everything in detail, in exactly the same manner as yesterday during his meeting with the French president", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Interfax.

"The accusations against Russian Federation have no basis whatsoever", he said. Since May, Russia has been stopping and delaying shipping in the region, in the process imposing significant costs on vessels seeking to transact in Ukrainian ports.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says Russia must allow ships access to Ukrainian ports on the Sea of Azov through the Kerch Strait, which separates the Russian mainland from the annexed Crimean Peninsula. "The ship's logs of the detained Ukrainian ships contain the task to penetrate the territorial waters of Russian Federation, and this is confirmed by the sailors' testimony".

Vitaliy Sinhur, a dock worker in Berdyansk, said the movement of ships has significantly ebbed.

Poroshenko's comments come after a week of escalating tensions.

Russian Federation continues to hold 24 Ukrainian sailors detained in the November 25 incident, despite demands from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation for their release from detention centers in Moscow. "There are plans to build at least two or more ships". "And control the Sea of Azov", he added.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation foreign ministers are to discuss the incident later this week.

Ukraine fears the Russian aggression will lead to further armed conflict and has called on the West for military support.

"Russia recently seized Ukrainian ships and sailors near the Kerch Strait".

"Yes, Berdyansk and Mariupol ports are partially unlocked".

Russia's military build-up in the region over the past five years undermines the sovereign rights and interests of all Black Sea littoral states, because it is created to empower Moscow with the capability to assert monopoly control over the region, including to deny freedom of movement at sea and in the air.
