President Donald Trump will nominate State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert as US ambassador to the United Nations, a source familiar with his decision said on Thursday, tapping someone with no prior policy or political experience to deal with some of the world's thorniest issues.

A former news reporter for ABC, she joined Fox in 1996, originally as a correspondent and later as a co-host for Fox and Friends.

Nauert would replace current ambassador Nikki Haley, who plans to leave her post at the end of the year, according to Bloomberg News.

The decision could be announced as early as Friday, the source said, requesting anonymity. Officials at the White House at times viewed Haley with skepticism, in part over her willingness to publicly disagree with the president. She will have to be confirmed by the Senate to become ambassador to the United Nations.

Ms Nauert was made state department spokeswoman in April 2017, her first government position.

The administration has also worked through the United Nations to try to find a political solution to the wars in Syria and Yemen, two issues that will confront Nauert.

In addition to that role, Ms Nauert was appointed acting undersecretary for public diplomacy and public affairs in March this year.

Nauert, who did not have a good relationship with Tillerson and had considered leaving the department, told associates at the time she was taken aback by the promotion offer and recommended a colleague for the job.

Her appointment to the United Nations role would have to be approved by the US Senate. Barred from traveling with Tillerson, she embarked on her own overseas trips, visiting Bangladesh and Myanmar past year to see the plight of Rohingya Muslims, and then Israel after a planned stop in Syria was scrapped. She hadn't specialized in foreign policy or global relations.
