The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Trump seemed to be directing calls away from Kelly and toward Nick Ayers-Vice President Mike Pence's chief of staff-who has always been rumored as Kelly's eventual replacement.

Kelly has had a tougher relationship with Trump than his predecessor did and instituted more restrictions around who could reach the president.

A freewheeling former businessman, Trump brought Kelly in a year ago to restore order to his often chaotic White House, but has clashed repeatedly with the retired Marine Corps general in recent months.

CNN reported on Friday that Trump had been discussing a replacement plan. But the 68-year-old Kelly has increasingly found himself at odds with Trump's somewhat-unorthodox leadership style.

NBC News reported that Kelly refused to promote some of her aides, prompting Trump to tell his chief of staff to give the first lady what she wanted. Vice President Mike Pence's chief of staff Nick Ayers remains the top contender, senior White House sources said.

Ayers and Kelly both typically join Trump and Pence during their weekly lunch in the dining room outside the Oval Office.

Kelly's resignation had always been rumored amid signs that he and Trump had grown irritated with each other.

Kelly, a retired general and the former secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, has been chief of staff since July 2017.

The two agreed to hold off on new tariffs of each other's exports pending renewed talks on an overall agreement over trade rules. On Tuesday, Trump said that the trade negotiations between Washington and Beijing would take 90 days.

On Friday, Trump announced a new USA attorney general and a new US ambassador to the United Nations, and on Saturday he nominated Army Gen. Mark Milley to replace Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Mr Kelly's replacement would be named "over the next day or two", Mr Trump added.

Kelly seemed in many ways a flawless fit to lead Trump's White House.

But Kelly's tenure was hardly smooth sailing.

Here are some senior figures who have been fired or quit the administration since Trump took office on January 20, 2017.

At times, Kelly was the source of his own downfall.

Three months earlier, he told reporters on Capitol Hill that some undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children were "too lazy" to sign up for a program protecting them from deportation. Kelly's shifting accounts caused his credibility inside the West Wing to plummet, and it never truly recovered, according to officials.

In November, it was reported that Kelly may leave his position soon over repeated clashes with the first lady Melania Trump.
