Instagram Botches Horizontal Test

Instagram Starts Testing a Horizontal Feed & Users Freaked Out Instagram releases major update to feed, users trash it on Twitter and the update disappears

Thankfully, it turned out that the new horizontal scrolling style was just a test and that a bug caused it to seed to more users than expected. As users are more comfortable with vertical scrolling of feed because they are experiencing it since the app launched, so people showed their dissatisfaction over the company's testing.

Facebook today released an update to its Instagram photo and video sharing app that fundamentally changed the way that users interact with posts.

"Sorry about that", tweeted Instagram's head of product, Adam Mosseri, after the update went live and stayed up for around an hour before being rolled back. "We apologize for any confusion" an Instagram spokesperson tells TechCrunch.

That Snapchat update saw snap streaks and individual stories grouped together on a single page, which many users thought was confusing and cluttered, while a "Discovery" page and a "Friends" page were added.

Typically, an Instagram feed goes up and down, with a user able to flick their finger through a number of photos. Now, Instagram appears to be gunning for the ability to scroll up. Either way, Instagram fans were very happy to have their normal timeline back - at least for now. The feed movement was slower because you could only go through one single post at a time.

The Verge's Chaim Gartenberg wrote that even if Thursday's update was a mistake, there's reason to believe Instagram is "taking the horizontal feed seriously". If you're still seeing the horizontal feed in the app, try restarting it, Mosseri says. A notice simply appeared when the app was launched Thursday morning advising users of the update.

Instagram has not publicly announced the change, and Instagram users at Business Insider with both iPhone and Android devices have not received the update.
