Three other US service members were wounded along with a USA military contractor, they added.

The wounded victims were evacuated and receiving medical attention, officials said. The names of the dead and the injured were not immediately released.

On Sunday, the DOD had identified the soldier that was killed in the Garmsir District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan from "injuries sustained while engaging enemy forces" the day prior as Sgt. Leandro A.S. Jasso.

According to an AP Report, The Taliban claimed responsibility for the deadliest attack on American forces since June 2017.

Separately, the military said Tuesday that a preliminary review has found that an Afghan commando likely accidentally shot a U.S. Army Ranger on Saturday during a raid on a compound in a remote part of the country. The two districts, which are predominantly comprised of Hazara populations, were considered to be the most secure rural districts in all of the country.

American-led combat operations against the Taliban officially ended in 2014, but some USA troops remain in the country to provide training and assistance to Afghan forces, which do most of the fighting.

"Sgt. Jasso was killed defending our nation, fighting al-Qaeda alongside our Afghan partners", Miller said in a statement.

A total of 13 United States troops have been killed this year in Afghanistan, according to the Defense Post publication.

The soldier's death follows a spate of so-called "insider attacks" that have rattled foreign troops tasked with training and assisting Afghan security forces. Of those, 12 were combat fatalities, the most in a single year since the end of 2014, when most worldwide combat troops were withdrawn from the country.
