From bad to worse: Trump's media relationship frays more

CNN released a statement following President Donald Trump's press conference on Wednesday, saying his attacks on the network's White House correspondent Jim Acosta and the media are "dangerous" and "disturbingly un-American".

When asked whether the Republican party has supported white nationalists, Trump replied: "It's a very racist question" and called the reporter a "terrible person".

Trump appeared ready to walk out as Acosta clung to the microphone and persisted with questions about the president's views on a caravan of Central American migrants making its way to the U.S. border. Trump said, "That's enough" at least five times, pointing directly at Acosta but Acosta kept talking over him, demanding to ask a question about the Russian Federation investigation.

Acosta tried to explain why he thinks the caravan was not an invasion to which Trump responded: "Thank you for telling me that information". Trump said he's not. The way you treat Sarah Huckabee is terrible, and the way you treat other people is disgusting.

Widely viewed as a referendum on Mr Trump's presidency, the election results offered a split decision that revealed deep tensions in the American electorate. 'Mia Love showed me no love. "Honestly, I know you have it written down and you're going to tell me 'What do you think?' That is a racist question", he continued. Trump interrupted her, calling it a racist question.

It smacked of theater, given that Trump had picked pugnacious Acosta from among the crowd of reporters, to ask a question.

Trump maintained his view that the migrants do, in fact, represent an invasion of this country and left their disagreement of the group of illegal immigrants making their way here as being a difference of opinion.

In response - as captured by C-SPAN - Trump began, "Here we go". "But they have to come in legally".

Some Democrats in the House of Representatives, where the party now has a majority, have threatened to use the subpoena power they will gain in January to investigate Mr Trump and his administration's actions.

"Just sit down", Trump said. And the way you treat other people is terrible.

The reporter was Yamiche Alcindor of PBS Newshour, an African American reporter. During a White House press briefing last month, Acosta tried to force Sanders to spell out which news outlets are considered to be the "enemy of the people".

"When you report fake news", said Trump, "you are the enemy of the people". "You are a rude, bad person, you shouldn't be working for CNN".
