A majority (56%) of Americans said the things Trump says publicly about the Russian Federation investigation are mostly or completely false, according to an August CNN poll conducted by SSRS.

Court documents made public on Thursday said Cohen discussed the Trump Tower Moscow plan with the president and his family multiple times.

"He is lying about a project that everybody knew about", Trump told reporters at the White House before jetting off to the G20 summit in Argentina. "He's got himself a big prison sentence".

Once known as Trump's "pit bull" and right-hand man, Cohen was privy to multi-million-dollar deals and payments to two alleged lovers - whose claims could have potentially sabotaged his boss's 2016 election.

"Now here's the thing".

Cohen pleaded guilty to making false statements to both the House and Senate Intelligence Committees.

As part of this deal, Cohen pleaded guilty to lying to Congress regarding a Trump Tower project in Moscow.

Prosecutors said Cohen had tried to give a false impression that the Moscow project ended before the Republican presidential campaign properly began in 2016 with the Iowa caucus. He falsely said that planning had ended in January 2016, that he had not considered to traveling to Russia in relation to the plans, and that he had not heard from any Russian officials about the project.

Cohen said he lied to "be loyal" to Trump and consistent with Trump's "political messaging".

But Cohen's admission seems to bring Mr Mueller one step closer to the doors of the Oval Office, particularly any accusations of attempts to cover up connections to Russian Federation. Adult-film star Stormy Daniels was given US$130,000 and former Playboy model Karen McDougal was paid US$150,000.

President Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen has pleaded guilty to a new criminal charge. He said they were "very brave" for resisting Mueller's investigation.

In the Post interview, Trump also praised two other supporters who are caught up in the Russian Federation probe - conservative author and conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi and longtime Trump associate Roger Stone.

"When will this illegal Joseph McCarthy style Witch Hunt, one that has shattered so many innocent lives, ever end - or will it just go on forever?" Mueller is trying to determine whether or not Stone acted as an intermediary between the Trump campaign and WikiLeaks at a time when WikiLeaks was publishing or getting ready to publish hacked Democratic e-mails, but Stone has maintained that he never discussed WikiLeaks with Trump in 2016.

"Did you ever see an investigation more in search of a crime?" he wrote on Twitter on Thursday.

Senate Intelligence Committee chairman Richard Burr says Cohen's guilty plea shows "the reason people shouldn't lie when they're in front of a congressional investigation".

It's no coincidence that in 2018, major media outlets like MSNBC and CNN have made a point of inviting Jill Wine-Banks, John Dean, Dan Rather and Carl Bernstein to appear as guests and comment on Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia-related investigation. "Expected to enter guilty plea for false statements to Congress coupled with dozens of hours of testimony potentially damaging to Pres Trump-Special Counsel values testimony".
