Authorities retrieved three more suspicious packages Thursday, two addressed to former Vice President Joe Biden in Delaware and one to Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro in Manhattan, officials said.

The investigation comes less than 24 hours after authorities across the country began investigating a series of suspicious packages containing explosive devices that were mailed to prominent Democrats and CNN's offices in NY.

Authorities also are trying to track down a package believed addressed to former Vice President Joe Biden, two law enforcement sources told CNN's Josh Campbell and Brynn Gingras on Wednesday night.

The package addressed to Biden - the ninth this week - was discovered as a device was removed from a Lower Manhattan property belonging to Robert De Niro. "Fear is the intent and we are trying to counter fear, so we've deployed National Guard, we doubled the state police, you'll see more of a police presence in NY".

Now, police are investigating a suspicious package sent to actor Robert De Niro.

It comes as Mr Trump has launched a new attack on the media - hours after glass-filled pipe bombs were sent to Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and the offices of CNN.

The packages also went to former CIA Director John Brennan (in care of CNN in New York) and former Attorney General Eric Holder. The mail facility was evacuated and a bomb squad called on to the scene, according to KABC.

Brennan, one of the targets of the suspected pipe bombs, said Trump's critics "will not be intimidated into silence", in response to the president's tweet.

A package containing a "live explosive device", according to police, received at the Time Warner Center which houses the CNN New York bureau, in New York City, is shown in this handout picture provided October 24, 2018.

In June, 75-year-old De Niro received a standing ovation at the Tony Awards in NY for using an expletive to condemn Mr Trump. There's also been no immediate claim of responsibility. "If it's an electrical system, the wires, batteries, battery holders, switch. how the device was meant to explode and the components associated with that, what we call a defusing system", he explained.

The president tweeted that mainstream media must "clean up its act". Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, the sources said.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump condemned the attempted bombings and said, "Acts or threats of political violence have no place in the United States". The NYPD bomb squad blocked off streets to haul the device away in a total containment vessel.

The package address to De Niro was found at his Tribeca production company in New York City, according to the New York Times. Police Commissioner James O'Neill said it was taken to a secure facility in the Bronx.

It is the ninth package intercepted as authorities continue the manhunt for the serial bomber targeting the liberal elite including the Obamas, Clintons and CNN.

The flurry of mail bomb activity has sparked the creation of a federal task force to hunt for the source of the packages.

Some leading Democrats were quick to accuse Mr Trump himself of stoking the potential for political violence by frequently engaging in hyper-partisan, vitriolic rhetoric.
