"I'll be proud to vote to advance this nomination tomorrow", McConnell said on the Senate floor on Thursday.

The United States' Senate is bracing itself for a critical vote on moving ahead with the nomination of controversial candidate Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Republicans control the Senate by a meager 51-49.

Mr. Trump nominated Judge Kavanaugh in July to replace retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, but confirmation proceedings were delayed as a result of multiple women accusing the Supreme Court hopeful of sexual misconduct.

But the wonder isn't so much how she's going to vote as why there's any doubt: A close reading of Collins' record strongly indicates she will be a yes on Kavanaugh.

Ms Collins, a moderate, pro-choice lawmaker from ME, said Mr Kavanaugh was entitled to the "presumption of innocence" as the allegations against him lacked corroborating evidence.

She went on to say that the allegations "fail to meet the more likely than not standard".

Annie Daines is set to marry Brad Moss in Montana Saturday, the same day of the final Kavanaugh vote now slated for about 5 p.m. Saturday in Washington D.C.

Collins noted that the Supreme Court confirmation process of Kavanaugh is akin to a "gutter-level political campaign" and a "dysfunctional circus" when it should be a "solemn occasion".

Judge Kavanaugh denied the claim - and allegations that he drank to the point of memory loss at the time - in a feisty confrontation with senators.

Flake was the Republican from Arizona who engineered the last-minute delay so the FBI could conduct its week-long supplemental background investigation into the Kavanaugh accusations by three women. Though, when asked how sure she was that Kavanaugh was the boy who attacked her, Dr. Ford said "100%".

As protesters in a Capitol Hill hallway shouted "Shame on you", Manchin told reporters an FBI investigation that did not find corroborating evidence of Ford's accusations was thorough.

Manchin is the only Democrat who's likely to vote in favor of Kavanaugh.

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., looks on before the arrival ofTreasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin during a Senate Appropriations Committee for Financial Services hearing on the proposed FY2019 budget in Washington, D.C., on May 22, 2018. Her decision is in stark contrast to the one made earlier today by Sen.

The Senate voted to advance Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination in a critical test of support.

On the other side, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY called the fight "a sorry epilogue to the brazen theft of Justice Scalia "s seat".

"What left wing groups and their Democratic allies have done to Judge Kavanaugh is nothing short of monstrous", Republican Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa declared before the vote.

She described her decision to oppose Kavanaugh as "agonizing", and said that while she hopes he will be a "neutral arbiter" on the court, he was not "the right person for the court at this time". Voting for an end to the endless debate that defines the Senate is not the same thing as voting for Kavanaugh's final confirmation.

"Based on all the information I have available to me".

Also voting to move the nomination forward was Democratic senator Joe Manchin, who had been undecided. Kavanaugh's nomination as a replacement for retiring justice Anthony Kennedy was controversial from the start - but the initial focus was exclusively on the conservative views held by the married father of two.
