Four of the seven were killed in a single incident when they breached the Israeli side of the fence and approached an army post, the Israeli military said.

He was speaking at a funeral of Palestinians who were killed by Israeli forces along the border fence between the besieged Gaza Strip and the occupied territories a day earlier.

"Israel will not tolerate a situation in which fuel tankers are allowed to enter Gaza on the one hand, while terror and violence are used against [Israeli] soldiers and Israeli citizens on the other", said Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

Israeli army spokesman Jonathan Conricus said around 20 Palestinians had crossed the border in an "organised attack" after an explosive device destroyed a portion of the fence.

The terms of the deal saw Doha, a longtime Hamas backer, pledge to pay $60 million (52 million euros) for fuel to be brought into Gaza over six months to supply the strip's sole power plant.

But thousands of protestors again gathered Friday in sites along the border, AFP correspondents said. He said an investigation was underway but did not give further details.

Abbas says that arranging deals with Hamas is equivalent to recognizing its control over Gaza.

CNN crews witnessed Palestinians throwing grenades and burning tires, and burning the border fence - with Israeli forces responding with tear gas, live fire and a water cannon.

The main border crossing to deliver fuel to Gaza had been closed by Israel for weeks on two separate occasions in July and August.

Protesters demand the right of return to their homes and villages in historical Palestine from which they were driven in 1948 to make way for the new state of Israel.

Israel accuses Hamas of orchestrating the weekly border riots that have taken place since March to provide cover for attacks.

Israel has also launched several wars on the Palestinian sliver, the last of which began in early July 2014 and ended in late August the same year.

They added that Hamas leader Ismail Haniya also attended the protests east of Gaza City and hailed the ongoing demonstrations.
