As the Senate heads closer to a final vote on whether to confirm Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, accused of sexual assault and misconduct, Democratic Sen.

In a procedural vote Friday that handed Republicans an initial victory, senators voted 51-49 to limit debate, defeating Democratic efforts to scuttle the nomination with endless delays. "I will vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh".

His confirmation will tilt the Supreme Court further toward conservatives potentially for decades to come.

Collins, who praised Kavanaugh's judicial record and attacked liberal "special interest" organizations for getting involved in protests, quickly breezed over Christine Blasey Ford's sexual assault allegations against the nominee and attempted to play both sides. She said she would vote to move Kavanaugh's nomination forward, which was met with screaming and accusations by protesters. But Senate Democrats are defending multiple seats in states Trump easily carried, making the Kavanaugh vote a potential liability. Chris Coons said Friday he's "disappointed" about the additional FBI investigation into the allegations, but insists the outcome is yet to be determined.

Roche also described Kavanaugh's drinking as "unusual" and said he drank heavily to the point of becoming "angry" and "belligerent".

"I think what Susan did today was rise to the occasion when the stakes were so high", said Sen.

Daines, a Montana Republican who has supported Kavanaugh's nomination, has been scheduled to attend his daughter's wedding on Saturday for months and made it clear he wouldn't be skipping the ceremony.

At that point, Murkowski came out against Kavanaugh while Flake said he would back him barring a last-minute surprise. Republican Senator Deb Fischer described Kavanaugh as "one of the most thoughtful, preeminent judges in our nation".

Collins told a rapt Senate that she does not believe that sexual assault allegations against Kavanaugh rise to a level to "fairly prevent" him from serving on the high court. McConnell said a vote for Kavanaugh showed that the Senate was "a chamber in which the politics of intimidation and personal destruction do not win the day". Murray said lawmakers may not have believed Hill then but urged them to stand behind Blasey Ford now by rejecting the Kavanaugh nomination.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., who was first elected in the "Year of the Woman" in 1992 after the confirmation of Justice Clarence Thomas, said that in confirming Kavanaugh the Senate would be telling young girls and women that "your voices just don't matter".

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's fate was in doubt for almost a month after the first accusation against him. "With the Kavanaugh nomination, it has finally hit rock bottom", said Collins.

I believe Brett Kavanaugh's a good man.

All eyes are on several swing senators for Saturday's final vote. Thank you for hearing us.

Coons said undecided senators ought to "weigh very carefully" the temperament Kavanaugh displayed during last week's hearing. However, based on all of the information I have available to me, including the recently completed Federal Bureau of Investigation report, I have found Judge Kavanaugh to be a qualified jurist who will follow the Constitution and determine cases based on the legal findings before him.

Ford claimed that a drunken Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed and attempted to take her clothes off while holding his hand over her mouth when they were both teenagers at a party in suburban Maryland in 1982.
