An African-American Boston city councilwoman ousted a 10-term congressman on Tuesday in a historic upset in the Democratic primary for a MA congressional seat. She also would be the first person of color to ever represent the state in Congress.

Teeming opposition on the left to Trump has fuelled primary wins for insurgent, women and minority candidates in Democratic primaries ahead of November's crucial midterm elections.

She was raised by her single mother, Sandra Pressley, on the north side of Chicago while her father, Martin Pressley, battled addiction and spent much of her childhood in prison.

Recent polls had shown Capuano leading, and he was was ahead in both fundraising - $1.7 million compared to Pressley's almost $900,000 - and in cash on hand, $750,000 to $131,000, through August 15, the end of the pre-primary reporting period.

The race was viewed as another referendum on politics as usual, with the younger and more energetic Pressley defeating a powerful incumbent, the latest in a line of similar upsets across the country.

Pressley, who will not face a Republican challenger in November, becomes the first African-American woman elected to Congress from the Commonwealth.

"Clearly the district wanted a lot of change", Mr Capuano told supporters on Tuesday as he conceded.

Her background is more like Gillum's than Ocasio-Cortez's: She has a long career in Boston politics. "Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman", he said. She and Ocasio-Cortez both defeated older, white congressmen who were reliable liberal votes, but who didn't look like many voters in their districts.

The piece goes on to quote her about how she plans to lay out a leftist agenda, and not just provide "resisting and affronting" to President Donald Trump.

Two other Democratic House incumbents, William Keating and Joe Kennedy, fended off primary challenges on Tuesday.
