'Lies and phony sources': Trump dismisses Bob Woodward's book

In Bob Woodward's New Book, White House Is 'Crazytown' From "Let's F**king Kill Him" to "We're in Crazytown": The Most Disturbing Excerpts From Woodward's New Book on Trump White House

There are profound civil-military implications in Bob Woodward's account of how Defense Secretary James Mattis has handled President Donald Trump. We're in Crazytown. I don't even know why any of us are here.

The book also claims that Gary Cohn, the former director of the National Economic Council, said he took papers from Trump's desk to prevent him from withdrawing from the North American Free Trade Agreement.

■In a meeting with Mueller, Dowd talked about the session and explained to the man investigating Trump campaign ties to Russian Federation why he was trying to keep the president from testifying.

James Mattis, the U.S. defence secretary, is said to have been exasperated after trying to explain the importance of America's military presence in the Korean Peninsula, which allows a North Korean missile launch to be detected in seven seconds. The book shows that both Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis and Kelly privately trashed their boss as incompetent, even viewing him as a threat to national security.

"The idea I ever called the President an idiot is not true", Kelly said in a statement distributed by the White House. As I stated back in May and still firmly stand behind, I spend more time with the president than anyone else, and we have an incredibly candid and strong relationship.

Trump's comments Tuesday followed a pair of statements the White House released generally panning the book.

"Mr. Woodward never discussed or verified the alleged quotes included in his book with Secretary Mattis or anyone within the DOD", a Pentagon spokesman, Col. Rob Manning, added.

Mueller has asked the White House for access to Trump, and administration officials have negotiated for months over how that might happen.

An early copy of The Washington Post associate editor's book was obtained by The Washington Post.

Mattis issued a statement Tuesday denying he used "contemptuous words" against his President. "He's this dumb Southerner", Trump said, affecting an exaggerated Southern accent.

Trump insisted he wanted to sit for an interview with Mueller, but a practice run with Dowd didn't go well.

The book says Mr Mattis acknowledged Mr Trump's request but then, after the conversation, told an aide he would not do "any of that". "This is another pathetic attempt to smear people close to President Trump and distract from the administration's many successes'". So Porter consulted Cohn, who told him, according to Woodward: 'I can stop this.

Trump did not speak to Woodward until after the book's manuscript was completed.

Trump specifically denied Cohn took papers from his desk, saying "there was nobody taking anything from me" and suggesting that, "It could be just made up by the author".

President Donald Trump wanted to have Syria's Bashar Assad assassinated a year ago but his defense secretary ignored the request, according to a new book that depicts top Trump aides as sometimes sidestepping instructions to limit what they see as his damaging and risky behavior.

Mr Trump is quoted as saying: "Let's f***ing kill him!" I told you he was a [expletive] dumbbell.

In it, the president claims he was never contacted for an interview or informed of Woodward's soon-to-be-published work - an assertion rebutted by the reporter.

President Trump described Attorney General Jeff Sessions as a "traitor" and "mentally retarded" to aides, according to excerpts published from an explosive new book by veteran journalist Bob Woodward.
