Kavanaugh accuser reveals self to tell story

Cour suprême le candidat de Trump aux prises avec une accusation d'agression sexuelle Kavanaugh denies high school assault allegation

The woman who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct broke her silence for the first time in an interview with the Washington Post published Sunday.

Ford told the Post that Kavanaugh and a friend - both "stumbling drunk", she says - corralled her into a bedroom during a house party in Maryland in the early 1980s when she was around 15 and Kavanaugh was around 17.

She contacted the Post through a tip line in early July, when it had become clear that Kavanaugh was on the shortlist of possible nominees to replace retiring justice Anthony Kennedy but before Trump announced his name publicly.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of SC, also a Judiciary Committee member, said that if Ford wants to provide information to the committee, "I would gladly listen to what she has to say".

On Fox News on Monday morning, White House adviser Kellyanne Conway said Ford "should not be insulted and she should not be ignored".

Democrats called for a delay in the vote, and two committee Republicans - all 11 on the GOP side are men - Sens.

"Staff-level examination of these allegations should not go forward until the FBI's career professionals with the requisite investigative expertise have completed their review", the letter states.

"I have never done anything like what the accuser describes-to her or to anyone", Kavanaugh said in the statement Monday. Ford said that Kavanaugh covered her mouth his his hand when she attempted to scream.

A committee spokesman said late Sunday that its chairman, Sen. "In fact, she was quite reluctant to come forward". "He was trying to attack me and remove my clothing".

All 10 Democrats on the Judiciary Committee wrote a letter to Grassley on Monday calling for a delay in Thursday's committee vote while the FBI fully investigates the allegations as part of its review of Kavanaugh's background.

Duke Energy, which provides electricity to customers in eastern North Carolina, has roughly 380,000 customers without power. Almost 9,00,000 homes and businesses were without power in the Carolinas early on Friday, utility officials said.

A lawyer close to the White House said the nomination will not be withdrawn. Conway, though, noted that Ford's account, while it should be considered, should also be "weighed against" other evidence.

Kavanaugh had issued a similar statement on Friday, before the identity of his accuser was made public. "He is buoyed by the immediate outpouring of support from lifelong friends, including 65 women who knew him in high school and signed a letter on Thursday attesting to his character after initial news reports of the allegation".

Feinstein said Sunday that the FBI should investigate the allegations against Kavanaugh before the committee moves forward with his nomination. Dianne Feinstein became public over the past week, she chose to go ahead and speak out herself, Sunday's report said.

"It's disturbing that these uncorroborated allegations from more than 35 years ago, during high school, would surface on the eve of a committee vote", Foy said. Many Democrats have called for a delay in the vote, and a handful of Republicans have opened the door to that possibility.

Now a judge on the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, widely viewed as the nation's second most powerful court, Kavanaugh seemed to be on a smooth confirmation track until the new allegation emerged.

Christine Ford is a professor at Palo Alto University who teaches in a consortium with Stanford University, training graduate students in clinical psychology. Flake went as far as to say he was "not comfortable" voting for Kavanaugh for the time being.

Republican leadership on the Judiciary Committee have questioned the timing of the revelation of Ford's letter and her allegation, coming just as the committee was preparing to vote on the nomination on Thursday.

In the letter, which was read to the Post, Ford described the incident and said she expected her story to be kept confidential.

Last week, Mr Kavanaugh said he "categorically and unequivocally" denies the allegations. She said Ford, a Democrat, isn't politically motivated. The 53-year-old judge was there to meet with the White House legal team to prepare for potential interviews or questions from the Senate Judiciary Committee, a source familiar with the matter said.
