Zimbabwe's Ruling Party Wins Majority in Parliament

Zimbabwe election: Both sides certain of winning Zimbabwe election: ZANU-PF wins parliamentary majority, electoral body says
Andrew Cummings | 02 August, 2018, 12:16

The streets of the capital, Harare, are quiet this morning, following a violent end to the announcement of parliamentary results.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission results showed Mnangagwa's ZANU-PF cruising to a big majority after picking up 109 seats against 41 for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). Mr Chamisa of the MDC is a 40-year-old lawyer with little experience in governance, having served only a short stint as minister some years ago.

Mnangagwa's government has accused Chamisa and his supporters of inciting violence by declaring he had won.

The observers expressed concern about delays in releasing the results of the presidential contest. Numerous protesters tried to get into the National Results Centre (NRC). "They caused massive destruction of property which includes shops and we are now assessing the extent of damage", she said, warning that such acts will be met with the full wrath of the law.

However, many analysts have said they expect a win for Mnangagwa, a Zanu-PF veteran who replaced long-time president Robert Mugabe after he was ousted in a military coup in 2017.

Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) praised the electoral commission for using biometric kits to register voters, saying it reduced the possibility of multiple voting.

Automatic gunfire has been heard all afternoon as troops attempt to disperse protestors.

Many protesters accused the army of unprovoked brutality.

Automatic gunfire has also been heard and an army helicopter has been spotted in the skies.

Several people have been injured as authorities clear demonstrators from the streets. "This time we will not allow it, we will fight", said a protester who wore a red MDC beret in central Harare.

Mnangagwa has called on Zimbabweans to "desist provocative declarations and statements".

"We must all demonstrate patience and maturity, and act in a way that puts our people and their safety first", he tweeted Wednesday.

Mnangagwa also reacted to the violence on social media, saying: "Now is the time for responsibility and above all, peace".

Now for the latest on the Zim elections, we cross to our reporter, Chriselda Lewis who is outside the Police Headquarters in Harare.

Each polling station must post its results outside after vote-counting, she said.

The EU did not understand why the release of the presidential result was taking so long, he said.

Mnangagwa said the violence was meant to disrupt the election and blamed the MDC leadership. We've more votes than ED (Emmerson Dambudzo). "This situation in town, you must remember it was fomented by none other than Nelson Chamisa because during his campaign trail he said if he loses elections, he will make sure that this country is ungovernable".

He said: "We have seen how we have won in those areas including rural areas, we were leading, and now they want to hide on the Zanu PF usual manipulation that they control rural areas".

The ZEC has not announced the official results.

The EU mission also said it would deliver a more detailed assessment of how the election results are handled and announced at a later stage.

Citizens of the capital are growing for anxious and are complaining about the results being delayed.

The party's supporters today went on rampage, protesting against the results of Monday's harmonised elections which saw Zanu PF winning two thirds majority in parliament.

Meanwhile, ZANU-PF denied the opposition accusation of manipulating the vote.
