South Sudan's warring leaders agree to share power, again | LNR

Khartoum: All systems ready for South Sudan peace deal Khartoum: South Sudan government and rebels reach peace deal
Andrew Cummings | 07 August, 2018, 05:00

"This agreement will not collapse and I am sure that it will not collapse because the people of South Sudan have now agreed that they must make peace among themselves", Kiir told journalists.

Under the agreement, Riek Machar will join a government of national unity and become first vice president.

The agreement outlines guidelines on power-sharing and governance, including settling boundary disputes, which will be guided by a Boundary Commission, and provides for an avenue for the people of South Sudan to participate in a referendum if need be to settle those disputes.

South Sudan's almost five year conflict began after Kiir accused his sacked vice president Machar of plotting a coup against him in 2013. "Where will I get this?"

The power-sharing deal stipulates that there will be 35 ministers in the bloated transitional government, including 20 Kiir allies and nine backers of Machar along with representatives of other rebel factions. The Parliament will have 550 members, 332 from Kiir's group and 128 from Machar's group.

Uhuru appealed to the political leadership in South Sudan to secure the future of the region by commencing the implementation of the agreement. However, Machar would be only the most senior of five vice-presidents under Kiir.

Pompeo Renews Calls for the Return of American Pastor Imprisoned in Turkey
Davutoğlu said the USA decision is a risky move and "incompatible with the most simple diplomatic courtesy and mutual respect". Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said he and Pompeo agreed to move forward with diplomatic negotiations.

Sudan helped broker the agreement.

CGTN's Patrick Oyet reports from South Sudan's capital Juba. Sunday's deal is the 12th ceasefire and second power-sharing agreement.

The opposition coalition of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) and other opposition factions who had earlier rejected the deal due to differences over the contents of the accord have all signed the pact.

President Kiir also said the remaining outstanding issues will be finalized with his rivals as soon as he arrives in Khartoum.

A 2015 peace agreement was shattered when the warring parties renewed fighting in July 2016 in the capital, forcing rebel leader Riek Machar to flee into exile.

With the country's agricultural sector severely disrupted, seven million South Sudanese - more than half of the population - will need food aid in 2018, the United Nations says.
