If temperatures continue to climb this weekend, the record for the highest temperature ever recorded in Europe will be broken.

Meteorologists in Granada, Spain, recorded temperatures of 46.6C (115.52F), just shy of the hottest European temperature on record, 48C in Athens in 1977.

Ladbrokes also cut odds on August highs beating Britain's 38.5C (101.3F) record, set on August 10, 2003, at Brogdale, Kent.

Europe sweltered through an intense heatwave on Sunday, with soaring temperatures contributing to forest fires, nuclear plants closing and even threatening the Netherlands' supply of fries, although some countries experienced a slight respite.

Forecaster of the edition declared that "a risky, potentially record-breaking heat wave" in the Iberian Peninsula can reach "the upper values of 40 degrees (40 to 50 - ed.)".

Spain also issued warnings of extreme heat for its southern areas, with temperatures expected to reach 45 C (113 F) in the cities of Seville, Huelva, Badajoz and Cordoba.

Portugal's Civil Protection Agency has been sending mobile text alerts warning of extreme fire risk in some areas, as they seek to avert casualties.

Past year 114 people were killed in two massive wildfires in Portugal.
