Plane crash in California parking lot kills five people Wreckage of twin-engine plane lies crumpled in parking lot in Santa Ana Calif. where it crashed Sunday afternoon
Andrew Cummings | 07 August, 2018, 05:07

Five people on board a small airplane were killed when the twin-engine Cessna crashed in a Southern California parking lot on August 5, authorities said.

Floria Hakimi, a real estate agent in Diablo Valley, uploaded a photo of herself captioned, "Flying out to LA", as she boarded the twin-engine Cessna that eventually killed her and four colleagues.

Knudson said the pilot didn't declare a flight plan and had made a decision to fly under visual flight rules, which isn't uncommon in good, clear weather. The plane hit an unoccupied parked auto.

The aircraft had departed from northern California earlier in the day and departed Orange County after a stop.

The plane also hit a vehicle (pictured), but no one was reported injured.

The plane went down in a parking lot just outside a Staples business supply store about 1½ miles from the airport.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 12.30pm on Sunday.

Luckily, the driver of the parked auto was shopping inside the store when the plane descended on his vehicle, the spokesman said.

Officials said Scott Shephard who was piloting the Cessna 414 when he declared an emergency before crashing about a mile from John Wayne Airport.

Another witness told local news media that he was coming out of a sushi restaurant when he saw the plane flying low.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating the crash.

A married couple had their lives saved when an off-duty firefighter pulled them from the aircraft.
