The final House special election before the midterms became the latest to shift significantly in Democrats' favor in the Trump era, after victories by Rep. Conor Lamb (D-PA) and Sen. Heading into the vote, the Republican candidate in a long-held conservative district had a slim one-point lead over the Democrat contender.

It's rare, but not impossible, for election results to be overturned when absentee votes skew hard in one direction.

But Trevor Moffitt, a public health doctoral student at The Ohio State University who voted for O'Connor, said he felt Balderson's attacks on Democrats went too far.

Provisional ballots won't be counted until August 17, and the victor of Tuesday's race won't be seated until the House returns to work on September 4.

Republican Troy Balderson led Democrat Danny O'Connor by about 1,700 votes with all precincts reporting, although the OH secretary of state's office said a final result would be delayed until more than 8,000 provisional and absentee ballots were counted.

Evan Weese contributed reporting.

The results of the race for Ohio's 12th congressional district, which was spun by some experts and pundits as a test for the possibility of a "blue wave" that could hit the Midwest this November, actually led to another Republican representing the northern Columbus suburbs, Delaware County, and the nearby foothills region until the beginning of 2019. It's an enormous amount of exposure for their party and we don't see that for the Republican party.

Trump took credit for the Republican candidate's performance, calling it "a great victory", even though the contest could be headed to a mandatory recount.

But the fact that this race was even competitive to begin with casts doubt on Republican prospects of staving off that outcome.

Over in Kansas, Republicans are locked in an internal fight for the governorship.

Trump endorsed Kobach, Kansas' secretary of state, on Monday.

"He is a fantastic guy who loves his State and our Country - he will be a GREAT Governor and has my full & total Endorsement!" Strong on Crime, Border & Military.

But the GOP candidate in the race, Troy Balderson, is a Trump supporter who recently welcomed President Trump at a town rally this weekend.

The night before the rally, Trump took to Twitter to attack LeBron James, calling the National Basketball Association star dumb just days after James, an OH native, poured tens of millions of his own dollars into the opening of an innovative public school in Akron.

Republicans are scrambling to avoid an embarrassing defeat in a seat that the party has held for decades. Bernie Sanders and NY congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who catapulted to fame when she defeated the No. 4 House Democrat in a June primary.

Senate contests in Missouri and MI were coming into focus as two vulnerable Democrats, Missouri's Claire McCaskill and Michigan's Debbie Stabenow, were expected to easily claim their party's nominations.

And in Missouri's 1st District, Democratic Rep. William Lacy Clay faces a challenge from the left from Cori Bush, a nurse and activist who has campaigned with Ocasio-Cortez. "He will win BIG in Nov".
