In a change, Trump says meeting's purpose was Clinton info

President Donald Trump on Sunday offered his most definitive and clear public acknowledgment that his oldest son met with a Kremlin-aligned lawyer at Trump Tower during the 2016 campaign to "get information on an opponent", defending the meeting as "totally legal and done all the time in politics".

That new admission, however, is completely at odds with the statement Trump crafted for use in the July 2017 news story that first reported the Trump Tower meeting. He also said the meeting was "totally legal" and he did not know about it. Weija Jiang reports.

Trump's claim that he did not know about the Trump Tower meeting is also "problematic", according to The Post.

If U.S. President Donald Trump is subpoenaed by a special counsel investigating contacts between the 2016 Trump election campaign and Russian Federation, his lawyers will attempt to quash it in court, one of Trump's lawyers said on Sunday.

The Trump Tower meeting was arranged by British music promoter, Rob Goldstone, who told Donald Jr that he had "information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russian Federation and would be very useful to your father".

The declaration that the meeting was indeed to get information on Clinton does open the door to this meeting being an attempt by Russian Federation to influence the outcome of the election, and in spite of Trump's claim that it was legal, still opens the possibility of crimes having been committed.

Quickly, though, that explanation fell apart, and we learned that Trump Jr had actually been promised harmful information about Democrats, including Hillary Clinton.

Trump, of course, claims to not knowing about the meeting, in spite of his involvement in the statement mentioned above. At one point, Trump even began attacking the attorney, and his reputation, much like Americans are seeing the Trump team has attacked Michael Avenatti.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is examining whether Trump campaign members coordinated with Russian Federation to sway the White House race in his favour. Jay Sekulow asked on ABC News' "This Week", suggesting that there are no laws prohibiting campaign operatives from meeting and working with foreign agents.

If true, it would also mean that Donald Trump Jr. lied about his father's knowledge of this to congressional investigators. "And so the ability for his attorneys to be able to make the arguments they need to make on his behalf, as I've told him for a long time, is what he should permit them to do".

"I had bad information at that time", the lawyer said.

So I think it's very important to point out that in a situation like this, you have over time facts develop. However, he said only Mueller can determine whether the evidence rises to the level of criminal activity that is "beyond a reasonable doubt". "This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russian Federation and its government's support for Mr. Trump". Last week, Trump's national security team said Russian Federation was behind "pervasive" attempts to interfere in November 2018 congressional elections. "But, instead, the exact opposite message is being sent and that is: As long as the Russians interfere on Donald Trump's side in the midterms, (Russian President) Vladimir Putin can count on the president to never call him out".
