Authorities emphasized that the weekend shootings stood in contrast to a general decline in gun violence, where city figures show shootings down 30 percent and murders down 25 percent, compared to the same time a year ago.

Johnson said additional officers had been deployed to prevent retaliatory shootings, leading to the arrests of 46 people on firearms charges.

"We have a heavy heart", Emanuel said at a news conference today.

"What happened this weekend did not happen in every neighborhood of Chicago but it is unacceptable to happen in any neighborhood of Chicago", the city's mayor, Rahm Emanuel, told reporters on Monday. Police said two gunman got out of a white Impala and shot four people at a block party in the 1600-block of South Avers Avenue at about 12:02 a.m.

He said most of the shootings are connected to gang violence in the city of about 2.7 million people, the third-largest in the United States.

Chicago police said dozens were shot in six mass shootings during a seven-hour span early Sunday, with at least four people shot in each of those attacks. Eight of the shootings during that period had three or more victims.

All 73 people were shot between 3 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Monday, according to police. "Somebody knows who did it", said Johnson, his voice rising.

Pep Guardiola Fearful That Raheem Sterling Will Leave Man City
City stormed to the Premier League title in record-breaking fashion last season, as well as winning the Carabao Cup. "We talked only about 'can I arrive on Monday instead of Sunday?' At this moment there is no problem for Hazard".

"I hear people holding us accountable all the time", he continued.

Authorities said they are searching for those who are leading the violence across the city. "They underscore the real problem - violent criminals who use illegal guns in some of our communities without the fear of consequences of their actions". "They get a pass from everybody, and they shouldn't'". Giuliani credited McCarthy for being an "architect" of the NYPD's CompStat program that helps to track crimes, allowing for police to better allocate their resources to high-crime areas. "He is out of touch with our neighbors in the neediest communities and he is failing them....to death".

"All of us know this is not Chicago what we saw, all of us who love this city and call it home have a responsibility to heal our neighborhoods", said Emanuel flanked by Chicago police officials.

"There are too many guns on the street".

The violence raced through the city less than three days after hundreds of demonstrators temporarily shut down the city's iconic Lake Shore Drive in protest of gun violence while calling for the resignation of Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Johnson said that both murders and shootings are down on the year, but said this weekend showed there was still a lot to do.
