At least 20 dead in strikes on Yemen's Hodeida: medics

Air strikes on hospital and market in Yemen's Hodeidah kill dozens Air strikes kill at least 26 people near hospital in Yemen’s Hudaida

The Saudi-led coalition denied any responsibility behind the air strikes on a fishing port and fish market that Yemeni medical sources said it killed 26 people in Hodeidah on Thursday.

Saudi Arabia and some 20 of its allies, including the United Arab Emirates, Morocco and Sudan, launched a brutal war, code-named Operation Decisive Storm, against Yemen in March 2015 in an attempt to reinstall former Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, a staunch ally of Riyadh, and crush the popular Houthi Ansarullah movement. "The disregard of worldwide humanitarian law in Yemen can not be tolerated", said Bruwer, condemning the attacks.

The attack on Arsan shows that the Houthis, far from surrendering to Saudi Arabia's superior air power, are capable of inflicting heavy damage on its economy. However, these parties have made their standpoints clear: the Yemeni government demands that Houthis leave al-Hudaydah port city, and the Houthis demand that the coalition halt its attacks.

Yemen's internationally recognised government is ready to attend UN-brokered talks next month in Geneva but is "not optimistic", a government official said on Friday.

Martin Griffiths told the Security Council that military experts say the rebel-held Red Sea port of Hodeida, Yemen, "has become the center of gravity of the war" - and avoiding a battle for the port and the city "has a better chance of being resolved within a comprehensive political settlement".

Earlier, Lise Grande, the United Nations humanitarian coordinator for Yemen, condemned the hospital attack as "shocking".

Last month they said they were pausing the assault to give United Nations mediation efforts a chance.

"Hospitals are protected under worldwide humanitarian law".

This came a few days after Saudi Arabia suspended oil exports through a strategic Red Sea channel, amid Houthi attacks on crude tankers on 25 July.

"Civilians are at risk, infrastructure is at risk, and we as the worldwide community have to demand that the two parties come together and understand the seriousness of this", said Haley.

In Geneva, the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned that Yemen is likely to be struck by another "major wave" of cholera cases, calling for a three-day truce to allow vaccinations.

"The impact of the strikes is appalling". Saudi-led pro-government forces are attacking the vital commercial hub, in a bid to seize it and cut off remaining supplies to Sanaa from the outside world.

The halt to retaliatory attacks in the Red Sea is aimed at "preserving the Yemeni bloods and in response to the regional and worldwide moves and efforts aiming to bring peace", he noted.
