US plan to end Iranian oil exports ‘a fantasy’: Rouhani

Other signatory countries are now with Rouhani in Vienna to discuss how the deal can be maintained.

"Insofar as it is possible for Iran, we shall remain party to the accord, we shall not quit the JCPOA (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) on condition that we can also benefit from it", Rouhani said.

MP Assadollah Qarehkhani was quoted by media as saying that a special committee had been formed in the Parliament that would deal with bartering oil with goods, adding that this was meant to help Iran overcome the impacts of upcoming United States sanctions.

Donald Trump's decision to unilaterally exit the Iran nuclear deal and introduce fresh sanctions against Tehran has endangered the longevity of the historic accord.

It also highlighted that the oil ministry's order to refiners "to prepare for drastic reduction or zero import of Iranian oil from November" was passed a day after USA ambassador to UN Nikki Haley visited India. Rouhani has said he expects European countries to propose measures in the coming days to keep the deal alive.

Austria's chancellor on Wednesday asked visiting Iranian President Hassan Rouhani for "full clarification" of the case of a Vienna-based Iranian diplomat suspected of involvement in a plot to bomb an Iranian opposition rally in Europe. It said he will meet with the foreign ministers of Britain, China, France, Russia and Germany.

Iran's president has called on the global community to defy Washington's stated intention of choking Iranian oil exports, describing the plan as a careless act of criminal aggression that doesn't care about consequences. However, Japan has so far refused to cut Iranian oil imports.

Rohani, accompanied by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, is holding talks with Austrian leaders in Vienna after a stop in Switzerland.

"Iran will survive this round of USA sanctions as it has survived before".

"We will have to see if it is going to be good enough for the Iranians", the source added.

"We heard very clearly what Nikki Haley said and we are in no doubt the USA will use pressure, not just on us around the world".

The US has told India and other countries to cut oil imports from Iran to "zero" by November 4 or face sanctions, making it clear that there would be no waivers to anyone.

The EU's foreign service, the EEAS, was not immediately available for comment on the meeting.

The United States pulled out of a multinational deal in May to lift sanctions against Iran in return for curbs to its nuclear programme. But European officials acknowledge that USA sanctions make it hard to give Tehran guarantees.

"These three countries account for about half of Iran's oil exports", it said. On Saturday, Trump wrote on Twitter that he had received assurances from King Salman of Saudi Arabia that the kingdom will increase oil production, "maybe up to 2,000,000 barrels" in response to turmoil in Iran and Venezuela.
