"I'm going to try and hold him here", she said, clasping her hands to her heart. But it wasn't just his height that made the nickname ring true to those who knew him best.

Kevin Cowherd, an author who worked with Hiaasen for years at The Baltimore Sun, described him as an open, fun-loving man who found humor in everything.

Police say a motive for the killing could be a vendetta Ramos waged against the newspaper after it wrote about his guilty plea and probation for a criminal harassment case against a former high school classmate. He faces five counts of first-degree murder.

President Donald Trump has reversed course and will order American flags lowered to half-staff in honor of the mass murder victims at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland, after initially declining the request.

Annapolis mayor Gavin Buckley said he was proud of the journalists who had "soldiered on" in the face of the tragedy. In 2016, for example, it was flown at half-staff 53 times, including after mass killings in Orlando and Brussels.

Five people were killed last Thursday when a lone gunman with a pump shotgun blasted his way into the newspaper office and shot five employees.

Fischman and Smith died June 28 when they and three other staffers - assistant editor and columnist Rob Hiaasen, community reporter and editor Wendi Winters and sports and community reporter John McNamara - were killed in an attack at the newspaper.

Trump has often had a contentious relationship with the press, decrying news outlets that cover his administration critically as "fake news" and once calling the media the "enemy of the American people". Ramos is accused of opening fire on Thursday over a longstanding grudge against the paper.

The hours between the news of the shooting deaths of five employees at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Md., and the release of their names on Friday were emotionally straining.

Trif Alatzas is the company's publisher and editor-in-chief.

The letters came from Jarrod Ramos, Sgt. Jacklyn Davis, a county police spokeswoman told The Washington Post Monday night and "were threatening in nature, but that's all we can release right now" about their content.

Police had responded to the scene within a minute of first reports at about 2:30 p.m.

The extent of Ramos' focus on the Capital Gazette column was evident in one of his many court filings.

Ramos, 38, has a well-documented history of harassing the paper's journalists.
