Doug Jones said Sunday that he could vote either way on President Donald Trump's yet-to-be announced nominee to replace Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.

The president is set to announce his Supreme Court nominee on Monday night. Foreseeing inevitable news break-ins to offer coverage and analysis, broadcasters are rejiggering their primetime lineups so as to keep too much fresh summer fare from being preempted.

According to the Associated Press, Trump's top contenders for the vacancy at this time are federal appeals judges Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh and Raymond Kethledge, said a person familiar with Trump's thinking who was not authorized to speak publicly.

Trump, who in recent days has made mocking reference to the #MeToo movement at a rally and in private conversations, is said to be intrigued by the political statement of picking a woman.

The source told Reuters that Amy Coney Barrett of IN, a Trump-appointed judge on the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, was still IN contention but that the Republican president had been asking more questions about the other two, who have more extensive judicial records. But Democratic lawmakers, who have a minority of seats in both houses of Congress, have acknowledged there is no clear path to block Trump's Supreme Court pick.

Outside adviser Leonard Leo, now on leave from the Federalist Society, said on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday that this kind of jockeying is standard, noting that "every potential nominee before announcement gets concerns expressed about them by people who might ultimately support them".

Kavanaugh, 53, was picked by former President George W. Bush to serve on the influential Washington-based appeals court in 2003.

Hardiman has built a reputation as a reliable conservative on the federal appeals court in Philadelphia, where he has served alongside one of Trump's sisters, Judge Maryanne Trump Barry, who is said to have recommended Hardiman for the Supreme Court vacancy past year. "I've never seen a president of the United States in effect make himself a puppet of outside groups and choose from a group of right-wing fringe ideologues that are prepared on this list". He has counseled them that there is no margin of error because the timing of the Senate's court vote is so close to an election that could hand control of the chamber to Democrats. "I'll give you the answer", Mr Trump said.

Ginsburg was confirmed by the senate by a whopping 96 votes to 3. "And I will devote all my energies to ensuring that we confirm the kind of Supreme Court justice America needs: a justice who says what the law is, not what she wants it to be; a justice who calls balls and strikes instead of swinging for the fences; a justice whose foremost allegiance is to the American people and to the Constitution".
