The Staten Island woman who scaled the Statue of Liberty on July 4 - putting emergency responders at risk and forcing tourists and New Yorkers off the icon on one of its busiest days - showed no remorse Thursday as the feds hit her with criminal charges.

Therese Patricia Okoumou, who climbed the NY monument in protest, expresses her outrage towards President Trump's immigration policies.

The climber ascended from the observation point, National Park Service spokesman Jerry Willis said.

Rise and Resist NYC, which organised the protest, said the woman's climb had not been part of the group's plans.

Okoumou was protesting with Rise and Resist, a group committed "to opposing, disrupting and defeating any government act that threatens democracy, equality, and our civil liberties", according to the group's website.

Okoumou pleaded not guilty to charges of trespassing and disorderly conduct in Manhattan Federal Court on Thursday and was released without bail after spending the night in custody.

A quote on the statue welcomes immigrants, reading: "Give me your exhausted, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free", and many believe Okoumou found that iconic structure as the ideal place to bring to the fore the plight of immigrant children being held away from their jailed parents.

Okoumou, who emigrated from Congo in 1994, was protesting the Trump administration's so-called zero tolerance policy and the separation of children at the U.S. -Mexico border.

Trump said during a Montana campaign rally she should have been left alone until she chose to come down on her own. "I would've said 'let's get some nets, and let's wait until she comes down".

'We don't know whether she had this planned before she ever got to Liberty Island or whether it was a spur-of-the-moment decision, ' Walker said.

Court papers also charged Okoumou with resisting arrest by refusing to leave her perch by the bottom of the statue's robes, about 100 feet (30 meters) aboveground.

"Borrowing a famous quote from former first lady Michelle Obama, she said, "'When they go low, we go high.' I went as high as I could".

The incident forced authorities to evacuate Liberty Island on a sweltering holiday afternoon when thousands usually visit the statue, a symbol of American freedom that has stood in the New York Harbor since 1886. After about three hours, officials were able to pull her down.

Park Police offers briefly detained the protesters, issued them summonses to appear in federal court, and then released them.

Okoumou faces up to six months behind bars for each count if convicted.
