Sebastian Vettel 'gave it everything' to pass Valtteri Bottas for the win

The reigning world champion missed out on victory at the British Grand Prix as title-rival Sebastian Vettel instead claimed the glory.

The German four-time champion seized the lead at the start and fought back after losing the initiative during two safety vehicle periods to register his second win at Silverstone and the 51st of his career.

Hamilton's team mate Valtteri Bottas led and might have won but for a second safety vehicle, after Renault's Carlos Sainz and Haas's Romain Grosjean collided, that kept the front four nose to tail and only fractions apart. The appearance of the safety auto on the 33rd of 52 laps, after Sauber's Marcus Ericsson crashed at Abbey, was greeted with a huge cheer from the 140,500 crowd who had already cheered Hamilton's every overtake. Explaining the move immediately after the race, he said: "I was able to surprise him, I think he thought that I wouldn't dare [to go down] the inside and the braking zone was coming quite fast".

"The rear of the auto was moving around a lot, particularly with the left-handers and obviously I had been hit on the right", he said.

Bottas was third in the running, three tenths down on Vettel, with Kimi Raikkonen fourth for Ferrari and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo fifth.

Earlier this week, Jordan's office denied knowing about any allegations against Richard Strauss , a team doctor who died in 2005. DiSabato, of Dublin in suburban Columbus, also told the AP that Jordan had direct knowledge of the Strauss allegations.

But the headlines belong to Vettel, who suffered a neck injury during practice on Saturday and was forced to wear supportive tape during the race, but came through for his fourth win of the season. A number of times Vettel attacked at Brooklands after using DRS, and Bottas repelled, with Hamilton similarly fighting Raikkonen but also filling Vettel's mirrors.

Lap 12 - Hamilton is already sixth, as Ferrari's Vettel keeps hold of his lead so far.

That dropped the Mercedes man to the back of the pack and Raikkonen was handed a ten second time penalty, served at the first round of pit stops.

Elsewhere, solid drives from Fernando Alonso and Nico Hulkenberg pushed them level with Force India in the points table. Obviously I struggled a little bit more towards the end with the tyres, but I wanted to get by as soon as possible. "It's all there!" Being Lewis Hamilton's race engineer can be a somewhat thankless task - today it involved some very keen cheerleading. Esteban Ocon (FRA/Force India) 29.930, 8.
