Samsung hopes the smartphones it makes in India will be sold locally and in other markets around the world.

Currently, Samsung manufactures over 60 million smartphones annually in India and with the new plant, it is expected to manufacture almost 120 million mobile phones.

The factory opening attracted some notable guests, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

According to IDC in February this year, India saw a 14% annual growth in smartphone sales totalling 124 million units in 2017. The 35-acre first-of-its-kind facility is expected to double Samsung's manufacturing capacity in the country.

By 2005, Samsung had become market leader in panel TVs and in 2007, the existing Noida facility started manufacturing mobile phones.

NEW DELHI, India - Samsung opened the world's largest smartphone factory in India on Monday, July 9, a move Prime Minister Narendra Modi said would help transform Asia's third-largest economy into a global manufacturing hub.

The new facility, which has been dubbed the "world's largest mobile factory", is located in Sector 81, Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Both Modi, who travelled in the Delhi Metro with Moon to reach the plant in Noida, said, "Our push for Make in India is not just part of our economic policy but a commitment for bilateral ties with countries like South Korea". Out of 120 mobile factories, 50 are in Noida only. He spoke of the expansion of smartphones, broadband and data connectivity, which he described as signs of a digital revolution in India. The Samsung's new unit is also expected to create employment for more than 5000 people.

The South Korean electronics giant had past year announced a fresh investment of Rs 4,915 crore to expand the existing plant by another 35 acres.

"Samsung's small and mid-sized suppliers can leverage the opportunity and create more jobs for Indians...2,000 new jobs will be generated in this plant", Mr Moon said, adding the Korean government will provide all necessary support in this journey.

"We trust that with Korean technology and Indian manufacturing, we will produce the best products of the world", Prime Minister Modi said.

India, the report said, was emerging as a key economic partner for Korea, with its huge market whose importance would only increase as South Korea tried to reduce its reliance in its two biggest trading partners, China and the US. Apart from Noida, Samsung also has a factory in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, five research and development centres and one design centre along with 1.5 lakh retail outlets and 3,000 customer service points.
