His daughter Maryam Nawaz was sentenced to seven years in jail and and son-in-law captain (retired) Safdar awarded one-year jail term. "Maryam was given seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed two million pounds (over Dollars 2.6 million) and her husband Muhammad Safdar was awarded one year rigorous imprisonment", the NAB prosecution team chief Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi told media outside the court. But in the ruling that ousted Mr. Sharif from office previous year, the Supreme Court concluded that he and his family members could not adequately explain how they were able to afford the expensive London apartments and that they failed to provide a money trail.
On June 14, both Sharif and his daughter left for the United Kingdom after they were granted a brief exemption from the ongoing trial. Sharif's family insisted that they had purchased the apartments with "legitimate" financial resources but were unable to disclose those resources before either the accountability court or the Supreme Court.
"The decision is flawed, politically motivated & has glaring loopholes", Shehbaz Sharif said in a series of tweets. He denies drawing the monthly salary.
Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rasheed remarked that a "political bigwig has been sentenced for the first time in Pakistan's history".
