The Cavaliers also tried to keep James, reportedly being on the phone with him seconds after midnight on Sunday as the free agency period opened.

The Philadelphia 76ers have always been a dark horse in the LeBron James sweepstakes (and in a Kawhi Leonard trade, and that's part of this story). But the Lakers will instantly rise with James, a three-time champion who after being swept by the Warriors in this year's NBA Finals said he is still driven and very much in "championship mode".

A look at the latest news involving unrestricted free agent LeBron James.

Representatives from the team will meet today with James' agent Rich Paul in Los Angeles, a person familiar with the plans told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks. The Ringer's Kevin O'Connor reported some National Basketball Association teams believe James has already decided on the Lakers, but is stretching out the process for added drama. But with Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward returning, and James headed West, the Celtics will likely be the favorites to represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals next season.

LeBron James produced a stellar performance. But he vowed to do everything he could to deliver a title to championship-starved Cleveland.

Why not: Flawed roster; blemished relationship with owner Dan Gilbert.

James averaged 27.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, 9.1 assists and 1.4 steals and shot 54.2 percent from the field this past season.

In the previous two Finals, James and the Cavs lost in five games and four games, respectively.

James made four straight Finals with the Cavaliers, winning a championship over the Warriors in 2016. Gilbert has gone above and beyond financial barriers to appease James, but the well could be running dry.

James' camp and the Cavaliers' front office have maintained a dialogue since the season ended, sources said.
