Judge says US must reunite migrant families or face penalties

Trump admin releases names of children under 5 separated at border Less Than Half of The Separated Immigrant Toddlers Will be Reunited By Tomorrow's Deadline

Before the parent-child separations became widespread, the government operated three family detention centers with bed space of about 3,300.

Foster care placement provider Bethany Christian Services, which operates in MI and Maryland, said the seven children under five in its care had been reunited or had travel arrangements for reunification.

"Our process may not be as quick as some would like, but there is no question it is protecting children", said Chris Meekins, a Health and Human Services Department official helping to direct the process.

One there is no information on the parent.

Abril Valdes, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan told the Associated Press that two young boys and a girl were among those reunited Tuesday with their families at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Disagreements arise when it comes to the protocols to be followed in more complicated reunification cases. Some parents are not eligible, the government said, because they have criminal records, were deemed to be unfit or, in one case, have a communicable disease. These parents have, according to DHS officials, been fitted with electronic monitoring bracelets and released into the United States because they brought children with them, illegally, across the US border.

Given that many households for potential sponsors include undocumented immigrants wary of being in contact with ICE, the fingerprint requirement may have led to an increase in the amount of time children spend in government custody.

In separating families, Trump sought to advance a hard-line immigration policy that past administrations had considered and quickly abandoned as inhumane.

"The judge made it very clear he wasn't going to allow the Trump administration to drag its feet on reunifying these children with their parents", Gelernt said. The Legal Aid Society in NY said it is representing at least two separated children under five years old that meet the judge's criteria for reunification on Tuesday.

Numerous separated children are fleeing violence in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, and U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen met with diplomats from those countries in Guatemala on Tuesday to discuss U.S. immigration policies.

The Justice Department says it will reunite only about half of the more than 100 migrant children under 5 today, after a federal judge in San Diego agreed to extend the deadline mandating the reunification of all of the youngest children.

"The kids are all over the country", ACLU lawyer Lee Gelernt said.

She noted that the issues at stake had been part of the Flores settlement - which deals with how the government can keep children in custody - for more than two decades.

Jennye Mariel Pagoada Lopez, 24, said one night she got so sick that a fellow detainee was forced to scream and wave at a security camera to get her help - but the officials who arrived still refused to get her to a doctor, despite her heavy bleeding. The families will be released after they are reunited.

On Tuesday morning, staff members at a nonprofit organization that has been housing numerous youngest children "made sure every backpack was full and every child got a hug and a goodbye", Southwest Key CEO Juan Sanchez said.

Government lawyers said some reunions may not immediately be possible because parents have not been located or are still serving criminal sentences, such as for crossing the border illegally.

The government on Friday asked for an extension of the deadline, saying it needed more time to find and confirm the identities of the children and parents.
