Sweden will play either England or Colombia in the quarter-finals of the World Cup after defeating Switzerland in a strangely compelling but untidy tie in St Petersburg.

In the first minute, after Sweden had lost possession, Xherdan Shaqiri drilled a speculative strike wide from outside the area.

"You have to feel really sorry for (Manuel) Akanji, who deflected the ball past Yann Sommer", Schmeichel said.

Sweden's goalkeeper Robin Olsen (left) and midfielder Emil Forsberg defend their goal during their 2018 World Cup round of 16 match against Switzerland at the Saint Petersburg Stadium in Saint Petersburg on July 3, 2018.

Sweden have been playing as organized and team-oriented soccer as anyone at the World Cup this year, and they will need to be just as sound in all facets again on Tuesday.

It was a goal by Emil Forsberg in the 66th minute which deflected off a Swiss defender and went in that proved to be the difference in this one.

Sweden's best ever finish at the World Cup was runner-up in 1958. "To experience this, to fire Sweden into a quarter-finals together with this group, it feels fantastic", said Forsberg.

Toni Kroos rescues German World Cup hopes with last-gasp victor
Germany are unbeaten in their last 11 games against Sweden and are confident of continuing their dominance over the Swedes. Now all they need is a win next week and a Mexico to win or draw OR a win and goal differential advantage over Sweden.

They broke through the Swiss cordon deep into extra time when the substitute Martin Olsson was released into space and brought down by Michael Lang just outside the box.

Unfortunately for Switzerland fans, Petkovic's team talk inspiration failed to materialise as his side entered the second half without the same venom or verve they had demonstrated in their previous second-half appearances.

Olsson was pushed in the back by Lang with only Sommer to beat in injury-time, with Skomina initially awarding a penalty but changing his decision to a free-kick after he consulted the replay.

Ibrahimovic, 36 and now playing out his illustrious career in the United States, would surely have put away some of the first-half chances created by his countrymen against a fragile Switzerland defence which was missing the suspended Fabian Schaer and Stephan Lichtsteiner.

A low-quality match featured some of the worst finishing seen so far at the World Cup, and two efforts stood out.

Sweden went into their clash with Switzerland having topped Group F thanks to wins over Mexico and South Korea, but the Swiss also had reason to be confident after qualifying unbeaten from Group E.

Svensson may return to the bench for the quarterfinal as Sebastian Larsson will be returning from suspension. Switzerland didn't have a chance to get to the other end after the resulting free kick was saved.
