Donald Trump insists denuclearization in North Korea happening, despite evidence to contrary

US National Security Adviser Bolton has said the weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles could be dismantled in 12 months Trump: 'possible' North Korea nuclear deal may not 'work out'

At the historic June 12 summit between Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump, Washington and Pyongyang agreed to cooperate toward the eventual goal of ensuring the total denuclearization of North Korea.

CNN host Fareed Zakaria paraphrased a famous Ronald Reagan quote to knock President Donald Trump's approach to North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, as he claimed the president likes to "trust, trust, trust, trust and never verify". -North Korea summit and ahead of an impending trip to North Korea by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a leaked U.S. intelligence report and an analysis of satellite data suggest the North may be continuing its nuclear and missile activities despite a pledge to denuclearize.

In an interview with Fox Business News' Maria Bartiromo on Sunday, Trump reassured his followers for the hundredth time that he had great "chemistry" with Kim and said, "I made a deal with him".

United States intelligence officials told NBC News that Pyongyang is increasing its nuclear fuel production.

Washington and Pyongyang have yet to negotiate a plan for how North Korea will denuclearize.

"He wants to understand the Russian position, but, more importantly, he wants Putin to understand our position", Bolton said.

Bolton also said the administration's plan would require the North Koreans to provide full disclosure of all their nuclear programs and ballistic missile sites, but that has not happened yet.

"Physically we would be able to dismantle the overwhelming bulk of their programs within a year", Bolton, known for his hard-line stance on the North, said.

AXIOS reported the two leaders could possibly meet again in New York City during the fall when world leaders are expected to pour into town for the U.N General Assembly.

The minister also announced funding to help protect steel and aluminum companies and their employees. The measures have provoked a widespread worldwide backlash.

"In terms of a timeline, I know some individuals have given timelines", said Heather Nauert, the spokeswoman of the State Department at a press briefing Tuesday, apparently referring to Bolton, the US national security adviser.

Bolton dismissed a question about whether Trump has been more willing to criticise U.S. allies than authoritarian leaders of rival nations, including Putin and North Korea's Kim Jong-un.

"The reports are just a good reminder of how complicated and hard it is to denuclearize the North", said Shin Beomchul, director at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies' Center for Security and Unification in Seoul. But the Trump administration remains cautious; it renewed North Korean sanctions last month even after Trump's praise for his agreement with Kim in Singapore.

"There's not any starry-eyed feeling among the group doing this", he said.

Most North Korean ballistic missiles use liquid fuel and take some time to get ready for launch, but solid-fuel missiles can be fired more spontaneously.

"If they have the strategic decision already made to do that and they are cooperative, we can move very quickly", Bolton said.

The Stanford team has proposed a 10-year roadmap, based on its belief that "North Korea will not give up its weapons and its weapons program until its security can be assured".

Trump has boasted that the statement reached between the USA and North Korea on June 12 in Singapore resolved the old foes' nuclear stand-off, but Pompeo has been tasked with nailing down details.
