To address worker shortages, small towns in MI and OH are also offering financial incentives to people willing to move.

Qualified workers can avail up to $5,000 a year but not exceeding 10,000 for a period of two years.

Vermont is looking to draw remote workers to The Green Mountain State and is offering an interesting deal to relocate. To be eligible, a person must move to Vermont after January 1, 2019, be a full-time employee for an out-of-state business, and work primarily from home or a co-working space.

The program will be run by the Agency of Commerce and Community Development.

Vermont has a small and rapidly aging population-and with that, a shrinking tax base.

The program would peak in 2020, when the state has been authorized to spend up to $250,000 on the incentives.

The act, which pertains to the promotion of remote workers and remote work arrangements, was signed to legislation on May 30 by Vermont Governor Phil Scott.

Vermont State Senator Michael Sirotkin said the program would work well for employees "wanting to get out of an urban environment into a more rural environment, those who are maybe paid well and don't want to leave their job". Funds will be distributed on a first come, first served basis, and there are annual limits to the grants. The Remote Worker Grant Program would take care of the relocation and other expenses.

Current residents aren't eligible.

"The one thing we need more of in Vermont is people", said Adam Grinold, executive director of the Brattleboro Development Credit Corporation, according to CNBC. The grant is part of the state's efforts to encourage migration and retention of older workers. In March, Gov. Scott and the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing announced the Stay-to-Stay initiative, a program created to help tourists permanently relocate to the state.
