Sgt. Conrad was killed and four other commandos were wounded Friday during an operation against the militants, the USA military said.

US President Donald Trump sent his condolences in a tweet.

An Al Shabab spokesman told Reuters it had carried out the attack in the coastal town of Kismayo, and claimed a higher death toll.

President Donald Trump in early 2017 approved expanded military operations against al-Shabaab, leading to an increase in US military personnel to more than 500 and the launch of dozens of drone strikes.

U.S. Africa Command said in a statement that U.S. troops with Somali and Kenyan forces came under mortar and small-arms fire in Jubaland, Somalia, at around 2:45 p.m.

The attack occurred in the Jubaland region, where a large force comprising about 800 Somali, Kenyan and U.S. troops were clearing a large area of Al Qaeda-affiliated Al Shabab fighters.

United States forces, in an advise-and-assist capacity, partnered with Somali forces in a raid targeting Ial-Qaeda militants aligned with al-Shabaab on May 9.

The incident is the first known death of a US servicemen in Africa since the ambush in Niger last October. The group was blamed for the truck bombing in Mogadishu in October that killed more than 500 people and raised concerns about al-Shabab's ability to build ever-larger explosives. The overarching goal in Somalia for the Defense Department is to help the Somali government in providing a safe and secure environment for the Somali population, they added. Earlier Friday, the U.S. Africa Command issued a statement in response to allegations that civilians had been killed in a May 9 operation, saying a "thorough review" found the allegations to be "not credible".

Last May, a U.S. Navy SEAL was killed near the village of Dar es Salam in Somalia's Lower Shabelle region, the first U.S. casualty in the country since 1993's Black Hawk Down incident.
