President Donald Trump delivered a stern warning on trade to foreign countries at the Group of Seven summit on Saturday, advising trading partners not to retaliate against USA tariffs on the imports of steel and aluminum.

Canada last week announced retaliatory tariffs on C$16.6 billion ($12.8 billion) worth of us exports and said it will challenge USA steel and aluminum tariffs under the North American Free Trade Agreement and the World Trade Organization.

President Trump concluded his visit to the Group of Seven summit on Saturdaywith warnings to USA allies, saying if they don't eliminate barriers to trade, they could lose access to the US economy.

In the communique announced by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the group of major industrial nations - Canada, the United States, the UK, France, Italy, Japan and Germany - agreed on the need for "free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade" and the importance of fighting protectionism.

French President Emmanuel Macron responded in a "courteous but very firm tone" to present the European side of the story, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe chimed in as well, the official said.

Disagreement over the sunset clause was the deal breaker that scuttled a possible meeting between Trump and Trudeau in Washington late last month in an attempt to bring the NAFTA talks to a conclusion.

"The United States will not allow other countries to impose massive Tariffs and Trade Barriers on its farmers, workers and companies", Mr. Trump continued.

"We're like the piggy bank that everybody's robbing ― and that ends", the president said. But I feel really confident", Trump said of Monday's meeting, which is the first between a North Korean leader and sitting USA president, "It's never been done, It's never been tested.

He also refused to discuss what media reports are describing as a tense phone call recently between Trump and Trudeau. In April, Trudeau praised the United States, Canada and Mexico for handling the NAFTA in a significant manner.

Russia was ousted from the elite group in 2014 as punishment for Vladimir Putin's annexation of Crimea, and its support for pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine.

The other G7 leaders will meet without him for the rest of the day, discussing climate change and global development.

Trump's statement was made just before he left: the USA president has been at odds with the G-7 countries over mounting import duties disagreements. "Or we're going to make a deal directly with Canada, directly with Mexico", Trump said.

"Whether you like it or not, and it may not be politically correct, but we have a world to run", Trump said before departing to the G-7 summit in Canada.

To add fuel to the fire, Trump reportedly asked Trudeau about Canada burning down the White House to justify his reasoning for viewing Canada as a security threat (for reference, that was the war of 1812, and it was British troops).

After the summit in Quebec, Trump headed to Singapore, four hours earlier than originally planned, to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

It is an annual summit bringing together Canada, the USA, the UK, France, Italy, Japan and Germany, which represent more than 60% of global net worth between them.
