Trump Plans To Announce Supreme Court Pick July 9

Gorsuch shows how much 1 vote matters on Supreme court - 660 NEWS Supreme Court Justice Kennedy's retirement promises huge battle for greens, others

The court opening came yesterday when Justice Anthony Kennedy, who was appointed by President Reagan more than three decades ago and has been the court's decisive swing vote in recent years, announced his retirement.

The president said he would not ask potential nominees about their position on Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that gave women the right to an abortion.

For the second time since he took office a year and a half ago, Donald Trump is weighing one of the most consequential decisions a president can make: selecting a Supreme Court justice. It comes as no surprise that he is focused on conservative judges, especially considering the potential of overturning Roe v. Wade with a new judge on the Supreme Court. He responded, "That's not a question I'll be asking", adding it would be "inappropriate to discuss". Joe Donnelly of IN, were the only Democrats to vote for Trump's first Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch. That infuriated Democrats, who say that McConnell's push to confirm Trump's nominee now before the November midterms reeks of hypocrisy.

Still, the fight could hurt Republicans in states with more Democratic or moderate electorates, like Nevada and Arizona.

Democrats who voted for President Trump's first nominee to the Supreme Court, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Joe Donnelly of IN and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, met with the president Thursday to talk about the Supreme Court, according to White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

During the 2016 presidential campaign Trump said he would seek to place a "pro-life justice on the court".

Trump met on Thursday with senators from both parties at the White House to discuss the court vacancy created by the retirement of Kennedy, which was announced on Wednesday.

England thrash Panama to qualify for knockout stages
That previous high-scoring affair turned out well, too, with England beating Germany 4-2 to win its only World Cup title. England face Belgium in their final group game on Thursday to decide who will be finishing first and second in Group H.

The conservative Judicial Crisis Network, meanwhile, announced yesterday it would immediately launch a seven-figure television and digital ad buy to press vulnerable Democratic senators facing re-election this year to support a pick who is fair and independent and would uphold the Constitution.

In 2013 - when President Obama ruled and the Democrats controlled the Senate - then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and current Minority Leader Chuck Schumer changed the Senate rules.

Six women are on the list, including Seventh Circuit Judge Amy Barrett, age 46, and 10th Circuit Judge Allison Eid, 53.

Trump said he would make his announcement on July 9, the day before he is scheduled to leave on a presidential trip to Europe.

Let us not dwell on the obvious truth that they could trust Trump's judgment because he promised not to exercise it: He promised that he would choose Scalia's replacement from a list provided by people who have actually thought about such matters - principally, the conservative lawyers of the Federalist Society.

If Trump is successful in pushing through a nominee who's likely to overturn or erode Roe, the fight over the future of the decision could play out in several ways.
