An estimated four million Canadians still smoke and about 45,000 die each year from tobacco use.

Despite almost seven of 10 smokers in Delhi being aware that smoking is risky, 53 per cent have been unsuccessful in their attempts to quit, new data released by Foundation for a Smoke-Free World showed. The report shows the pace of action in reducing tobacco demand and related death and disease is too slow and not keeping up with global and national commitments to control tobacco use.

"In Myanmar, smoking and betel chewing have increased nationwide".

This year the campaign will be titled "Tobacco Breaks Hearts" and is primarily centered around how smoking tobacco causes various heart and cardiovascular diseases, according to the World Heart Foundation.

Around 40,000 people die of smoking-related diseases in the country every year, and numerous diseases like cancers, cardiovascular diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are leading death causes in Vietnam, he noted.

Omiyefa said that every year, Nigeria loses all cadres of manpower and all categories of statesmen to tobacco-related deaths.

WHO said that the world no tobacco day was commemorated to focus on the impact tobacco had on the cardiovascular health of people globally.

"With the Quitline, Filipino smokers now have an easier, accessible way to put into action their intention to quit smoking", said Duque.

In 2017, more than 7,000 phone calls were placed for help on smoking addiction, while 8,400 patients were treated for cigarette addiction at nine hospitals.

"And one of the major factors impeding low- and middle-income countries is that certainly, countries face resistance from the tobacco industry that wishes to replace clients who die by freely marketing their products and keeping prices affordable for young people", says the WHO's Director of the Department for the Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases, Douglas Bettcher.

"Today, I call upon member states to implement measures that we know would strengthen tobacco control as found in WHO's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control".

WHO Representative to the Philippines Dr. Gundo Weiler, meanwhile, said that tobacco use is not only affecting the smokers itself but also their families as well as the country's economy.

She further stated that even exposure to second-hand smoke can trigger a heart attack or stroke in non-smokers.

On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day Thursday, the United Nations health agency hailed that smoking had declined significantly since year 2000, but warned that there were still far too many people indulging in the unsafe habit.

Tobacco use has decreased in places such as Australia, Brazil and Britain, where anti-smoking measures include higher taxes, bans and health warnings. A policy which prohibits tobacco and tobacco-like consumption, including cannabis in or on all grounds, facilities, property or vehicles in an area owned, operated leased or funded by AHS.

Released by the World Health Organization (WHO), it aims to raise awareness of the effect of cigarettes on the heart and encourage smokers to quit.

Such a drop has not been seen in a decade, according to Public Health France, which carried out the study.
