President Donald Trump: "I have the absolute right to PARDON myself"

"It is hard to imagine judicial backing of these views", said Mark Rozell, dean of the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University and author of a book on presidential powers.

Asked whether Mr Trump has the power to give himself a pardon, Mr Giuliani said: "He probably does". "President Trump is not going to do that. What he did was he called off the summit", he said.

Trump's legal team is making clear that it will combat any effort to force the president to testify in front of a grand jury.

Giuliani said there was no choice but to cancel the June 12 summit after Kim insulted the US vice-president and national security and threatened nuclear war.

Mr Trump also said he was considering pardoning lifestyle maven Martha Stewart and commuting the prison sentence of former IL governor Rod Blagojevich, convicted of corruption charges.

The summit is scheduled next Tuesday in Singapore.

Giuliani wasn't the only Republican against the idea of Trump issuing a self-pardon.

Giuliani spoke on Wednesday at a business conference in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani told ABC's This Week Sunday that Trump "has no intention of pardoning himself" but quickly added, "Not to say he can't".

"They have to be seeking peace". You wait for someone else to say it, or you die.

US President Donald Trump has asserted his presidential power and escalated his efforts to discredit the special counsel Russian Federation probe, declaring he has the "absolute right" to pardon himself.

The President made the assertion in a furious Twitter spree that criticised Robert Mueller's investigation into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign over interference in the presidential election.

While saying on Sunday that Trump wanted to sit down with Mueller, Giuliani added, "It's beginning to get resolved in favour of not doing it".

"The appointment of the Special Councel is totally UNCONSTITUTIONAL!" Because if they had any sense, they would realize they're trying to put together a case on an innocent man.

Ryan was responding to Trump's Monday tweet.

Giuliani rejected criticism that the defense team is attacking the justice system or public institutions.

Most experts say his claims of the right to self-pardon, and accusation that the Mueller investigation is unconstitutional, lack strong legal foundation. But he said his client needs assurances he won't be railroaded.

Trump's lawyers said he did. "They're going to have to convince us that it's going to be a fair interview".

Ryan's comment was the most recent from Democratic and Republican politicians warning the president not to halt or stifle the Mueller investigation. "But the reason it won't is because then it becomes a political problem", he said.
